Gippsland Galaxy has made a dream start to its maiden Victorian Women’s Football League campaign, with a 73-point win against Endeavour Hills on Sunday.
The Galaxy hit the ground running in their VWFL division five east debut, with a 10.23 (83) to 1.4 (10) win at Gormandale Recreation Reserve.
The team, which will be wearing the traditional red white and blue colours of founder TRFM Gippsland League, has only been training for little over a month and newly-appointed coach Nikki Schroeter was excited by the first-up win.
“It’s a credit to all of the players that have been turning up to training and putting in the hard yards to improve their skills,” Schroeter said.
“With each training the team is getting better at learning the basic skills of kicking and handballing and with more match practice hopefully we can keep improving as a team.”
The match started off with both teams keen to put the early score on the board, but it was Gippsland that took the early advantage, leading by 43 points at quarter-time.
It only got worse for the visiting Falcons in the second term, as the Galaxy utilised their speed across the ground and at the stoppages to deliver the ball quickly to their key targets up forward and extend their lead to 55 points at the main break.
Gippsland continued to pile on the pressure at both ends in the second half to eventually run out a convincing winner against its fellow VWFL division five east debutant.
Goal-kickers for the Galaxy were Sarah Jolly (four), Rachael Drennan (three), Tayla Tatterson (two) and Patricia Chapman with (one).
Jolly and Chapman were named in the best, alongside Kim Cunico, Brooke Van Nooten, Tanya Kilgower and Rebecca Jennings.
Next up for the Galaxy is a trip to Olympic Park Recreation Reserve to take on Rosebud on May 2 at 12pm.
