PS4 NPL QLD Round 6 Preview
Words: Matt Dorman
Brisbane Roar Youth host fellow free scorers FNQ Heat in the live stream match of a round which also features a top-two clash.
Brisbane City FC v Olympic FC
Friday, 17 April / Corporate Travel Management Stadium / 8:30PM
It’s a crosstown clash on Friday night when the competition’s two inaugural Grand Finalists meet in Newmarket.
Circumstances have changed since that dramatic night in 2013 with City now last after five fixtures, having conceded 19 goals.
Youth team coach Darron Heselden will attempt to kick off a bright new era after the former National Soccer League club parted ways with coach Glen Volker over the Easter break.
Olympic, meanwhile, notched two straight wins prior to the break and will be seeking a third to cement their top four spot.
Western Pride FC v Redlands United FC
Saturday, 18 April / Briggs Road Complex / 7:00PM
Western Pride will be desperate for an immediate return to normality after being on the wrong end of perhaps the most incredible result in PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland history.
Pride were three from four prior to last round when they were stunningly punished 12-0 by Brisbane Roar Youth.
The Ipswich side’s task of turning it around is made tougher by the absences of Gabriel Hawash and captain Jesse Rigby after both were shown red cards in that match.
Redlands, with just two points from five matches, are aiming to exploit any vulnerability to overcome their own faltering start.
Northern Fury FC v South West Queensland Thunder FC
Saturday, 18 April / Townsville Sports Reserve / 7:00PM
Northern Fury’s promising start to the season was emphatically wound back last round when Sunshine Coast FC stunned the Townsville team 5-1.
Jonathon Bagley netted Fury’s only goal in their first home match of 2015 but enough damage was done by then, leaving Ian Ferguson’s troops with catching up to do in eighth.
Their opponents this Saturday night, SWQ Thunder, were beaten 5-0 by FNQ FC Heat in a catch-up match last weekend as coach Chris Wilkes lamented a poor preparation.
His young side will need to prove sharper for their second straight trip north.
Brisbane Roar FC Youth v FNQ FC Heat
Sunday, 19 April / Perry Park / 2:00PM
Anything could happen on Sunday afternoon when two teams capable of wreaking havoc set on each other in the weekend’s live stream match.
Brisbane Roar Youth and FNQ heat have both scored freely in recent rounds but coaches John Sime and Martin Docherty will be striving first and foremost for consistency.
Their respective fortunes reversed over the past two fixtures as Young Roar were brought back to earth in a 5-1 loss to Brisbane Strikers, while Heat returned to winning ways against SWQ Thunder.
Fireworks are tipped to take place at Perry Park in what could be an all-out shootout.
Sunshine Coast FC v Palm Beach SC
Sunday, 19 April / Sunshine Coast Stadium / 4:15pm
An early-season six-pointer is set for Sunshine Coast Stadium when Sunshine Coast FC welcome Palm Beach SC.
Both teams sit just a point adrift of the top four in sixth and seventh respectively with two wins apiece, ensuring a fascinating fixture which could set the tone for their year ahead.
Jacob Fulluck netted a brace for Fire last time out, improving his tally as their leading scorer to four, while Brady Cronk has also impressed with three this term.
Sharks must juggle defending the duo while improving their own goalscoring efforts, having netted just five goals in four games.
Brisbane Strikers FC v Moreton Bay United FC
Sunday, 19 April / Perry Park / 4:30PM
Round Six will conclude on a high on as the competition’s top two jostle for title favouritism on Sunday.
There won’t be any shortage of feeling in the crunch contest with four former Strikers players now suiting up for the opposition, while Jets boss Adam Piddick was last season in charge of the youth team at Perry Park.
Two of the tightest defences in Queensland could well ensure first goal wins with a result either way to determine which club leads the league.
A point will be enough for Strikers to stay top, though Jets retain a game in hand.
