The 2015 University Cup pre-season competition took place on Sunday 29 March at Mahoney Park, Marrickville. This year saw UTS Australian Football Club host the University Cup for the first time since inception. The intervarsity round-robin competition is in its fourth year and is contested by four universities’ women’s AFL teams; Macquarie University Warriors, Sydney University Bombers, UNSW/Easts Stingrays and UTS Shamrocks. This year Sydney University took home the Cup.
The weather was perfect and the coaches were eager to test the opposition as well as their own players. The quality of football was outstanding. There were many tough centre battles where clearances were hard to come by, superb marks were taken by players on all sides, there were players dashing down the middle showing flair with controlled bounces and long kicks, and there was also the occasional classy goal.
What differed on the day, to previous years, was that the matches were mainly one-sided. Sydney University dominated winning all three of their matches and showed that they are the team to beat in the Div 1 competition this year. However, all teams were playing new players and fielding players in new positions. UTS did very well to match the three Div 1 teams and certainly learnt some lessons on the day.
The umpires awarded Maddie Collier, from UNSW/Easts, the best on ground on the day. Maddie played in only the first two matches before retiring with soreness but she showed outstanding talent with the ball all over the ground. There were several runners-up showing a large depth of talent in the AFL Sydney league. The players were given the opportunity to vote for the best and fairest on the day. This was a three-way tie between Maddie Collier (UNSW/Easts), Nicola Barr (Sydney University) and Amanda Farrugia (Macquarie University).
The teams would like to thank the umpires Danielle McCarthy, Ashley, Danielle and Liam for their ability to control the game and for their continual support of women’s football. Also, it was great seeing so many volunteers and supporters down to cheer on all the teams.
