Key players
Ron Wason is one of the most experienced players in the competition and it will be interesting to see if he spends most of his time down back, or pinch hits up forward like on occasions last year. Dale Fitzgerald (defence), Ted Strudwick (half-back option) and Sam Carruthers (on-ball) are highly respected players and will be called upon by the Bombers again.
Star on the Rise
Matt Varjavandi divided his time between Premier Division and Under 19 Division One in 2014 after 13 first grade appearances in 2013. The skilful 19-year old utility will hopefully provide more run on the outside for the Bombers this season.
Strengths
Under former coach, Jon Hayres, they had a strong defensive focus which is easy to see with the calibre and experience of their defensive unit. They missed Chris Murphy last year who will be handy alongside Wason. Adrian and Jason Harry, as well as Fitzgerald can spend time down back.
Weaknesses
They had the third worst attacking record in 2014 and couldn’t find a viable foil for veteran, Daniel Roberts. Losing Selby Lee-Steere (leading goalkicker in 2014 with 24 goals) nearly did it all himself last year and with him gone, they will need tall targets but also smaller crumbing type players.
Season defining month
The Bombers enjoy playing at home and their credentials will be tested against three possible finalists in Rounds 9-12. They have a very tight record with UTS, and a win away could provide a good springboard for three consecutive games at home against Pennant Hills, Manly-Warringah and Sydney University. We will know where they stand after these games.
Notable Transfers
Darcy Baron-Hay and Ethan Harvey are two young guns who will provide impetus when available to the Senior side. Selby Lee-Steere is a big loss for the Bombers as he heads overseas. With that, they lose three good quality youngsters in small forward, Jake Monk (Manly-Warringah) and classy midfielders, Lachlan Hayres to the VAFA, and Nick Foster to Sydney University.
Danny Says
7th
Gareth Lawson steps up from Reserve Grade to take over from Jon Hayres who steps into the Director of Coaching role. Lawson has a big job to add some flair to the side normally around the finals mark but in recent years has struggled to reach the upper echelons of the ladder. Injuries aside, they lack the key ingredients needed to make the jump in class.
