There was a VFL flavour to the AFL Victoria Metro Championships last Saturday at IKON Park.
Those in the crowd could have been mistaken for thinking the Essendon District Football League forward line had been taken straight from the 2011 Port Melbourne premiership side with Dean Galea and Patrick Rose prowling the forward 50. Galea finished with five goals and Rose two as the EDFL defeated Southern FL by 91 points.
The former VFL players did not stop there, with Port premiership teammate Stephen Brewer also in the winning side, along with Werribee’s Dan Schibeci, former Northern Blues pairing of Ash Arrowsmith and Adam Iacobucci plus former Williamstown player Matt Cravino just to name a few.
In the middle game new Port Melbourne recruit Kwame McHarg teamed up with former Port ruckman Wayde Skipper and former Williamstown player Jack Purton Smith in the middle for the Western Region FL.
The forward 50 for Eastern boasted former Box Hill Hawk Luke Barker (four goals) and former Frankston player Ziggie Alwan (two goals) while the familiar headgear of former Casey Scorpions captain Kyle Matthews was patrolling the wing in the EFL’s 34-point win.
Collingwood VFL supporters would love to have Nick Riddle back on the list after his best on ground performance in the final game of the day, along with former Coburg and ‘The Recruit’ star Matthew Dennis who was also among the best for Northern FL in their five point defeat to VAFA.
