Tiana returning for 2015 season
SHE was the spark plug off the bench in last year’s title run and now Tiana Mangakahia has decided to return to the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans for another SEABL season.
A Southern Districts Spartans junior product, Mangakahia enjoyed a memorable return to Carina in 2014 which saw the club claim its second women’s championship.
The 19-year-old point guard averaged 6.9 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game last season coming off the bench and has re-signed with the aim of returning to the WNBL.
“I love playing at the Spartans because it’s my junior club and after such a great year last season, it was a no brainer to come back,” Mangakahia said.
“After a year out of the WNBL, I really want to get back there so hopefully I can improve once again this season and help the team win again.”
Mangakahia spent several seasons in the WNBL with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and Townsville Fire an coach Donna Rinaldi said she was extremely happy to have the youngster back.
“Tiana showed last year she was more than capable of playing against the best in SEABL and we are looking forward to her continued improvement in the coming season,” Rinaldi said.
“Her speed at both end of the floor causes havoc and with her perimeter shooting having stepped up over the summer, she will be an important factor in our title defence.”
The Lady Spartans are in the middle of preseason training with several signings expected in the coming weeks.
Brisbane will start its season against Frankston on Saturday, April 11, at the Rowland Cowan Basketball Stadium.
