Olympic Women Put Seven Past Jets

Olympic FC Women have continued their perfect start to the season with a 7-0 win over Moreton Bay United Women at Goodwin Park on Sunday morning.
Lizzie Doherty netted a hattrick as the Yeronga club kept a second straight clean sheet and extended their goal tally to 12 from two matches.
Doherty needed little time to impact the scoresheet after missing the first round of fixtures, opening the scoring from inside the penalty area within three minutes.
Midfielder Nat Tathem twice came close to doubling the advantage soon after, but the hosts didn’t have to wait long for a second as Doherty robbed a defender and finished well to make it 2-0 in the 14th minute.
Ai Matsuzaki next headed over the crossbar from a corner, with Jets’ defence holding firm until Olympic broke through again after the drinks break.
Tathem was the scorer as her mishit cross caught out Renee Rudder and dipped underneath the bar.
Only the crossbar denied Doherty a third from a thunderous effort on the stroke of half time, with the break allowing Jets to regroup and hold out the home side for much of the second half.
Winger Jazmyn Perin’s shot on the turn in the 58th minute took her season tally to two, before Rudder pulled off a string of classy saves to keep the score down.
Despite the Westfield W-League goalkeeper’s best efforts, Doherty completed her hattrick in the 75th minute as last year’s Football Brisbane SEQ Women’s Premier League Player of the Year poked home under pressure.
The match seemed destined to finish at 5-0, but Olympic found time to add two in the final minute as Ai Matsuzaki speared an unstoppable strike into the top corner before Leah Miles drove the heart of defence and finished coolly to complete the comprehensive 7-0 victory.
Speaking after the match, Olympic coach Phil Canham praised his side’s free-scoring start to the season.
“Being able to score goals has been a problem of ours for a few years so it’s nice to start the season with a few,” Canham said.
Despite the heavy defeat, Jets coach Lorna Dent believed her young team was progressing.
“They’re trying to play football, trying to gel. Great teams don’t start as great teams, they become them,” Dent said.
