On Saturday 31st January the AFL Sydney Women's Development Program commenced at the GWS GIANTS home base at Tom Wills Oval in Homebush under warm temperatures.
The purpose of the program is skill acquisition with a focus on kicking in particular as well as some basic testing. While seperate to the 2015 BLK AFL Sydney Representative season, this program will give the players involved a head start. To assist in the kicking, former Sydney Swan Tim Schmidt from Kicking Dynamics will be on hand at each session to impart his knowledge. The 40 selected women's players were given some theory before getting into the practical session under Tim and his assistant Kieran Emery's watchful eye.
At the end of the session the girls took part in a dreaded 1km time trial to give a benchmark for all players to work towards as the season gets into full swing. Further testing during the rep program will give the rep coaches data to work with. Southern Power's Kathryn Hull won the 1km time trial, not far ahead of UNSW/ES young gun Nicola Vrachnas.
It was a pleasing first session with the next session again at Tom Wills Oval this coming Saturday morning.
Due to the timing of the AFL Women's match this year, the representative program will get underway before the season actually starts with Game 1 of the State of Origin series against AFL Canberra taking place on Saturday 11th April in the ACT.
