City Hold Off Late Knights Charge
Words: Michael Flynn
Brisbane City returned to winning form in their pre-season preparations with a 2-1 win over Ipswich Knights in the BLK Silver Boot on Wednesday.
Chris Toovey and Nathan Bird netted a goal apiece in the second half, before the PlayStation® 4 NPL Queensland club survived a late fightback from their Brisbane Premier League opponents.
The teams went into the break locked at nil-all with City dominating possession but creating few chances through the majority of the opening 45 minutes.
Toovey ultimately broke the deadlock on 52 minutes with his second goal of pre-season, finishing into the bottom corner following a movement down the left wing.
Bird doubled the advantage with 20 minutes remaining for his first goal of the pre-season campaign.
Knights set-up a tense finish when Trent Griffiths turned in a cross with four minutes remaining, however it proved too little late.
The win keeps alive Brisbane City’s hopes of a Semi-Final berth in the tournament, with their final group game next Wednesday against Capalaba FC.
Brisbane City FC 2 (Chris TOOVEY 52’, Nathan BIRD 70’)
Ipswich Knights FC 1 (Trent GRIFFITHS 86’)
