Macron Cup Washed Out
Words: Michael Flynn
Heavy rain in the south-east has claimed further pre-season casualties with Saturday’s opening round of the Macron Cup cancelled.
PlayStation® 4 NPL Queensland sides Palm Beach SC, Olympic FC and Moreton Bay United were all scheduled continue their pre-season preparations in the competition, while Sunshine Coast FC were preparing for their first pre-season hit-out against hosts Peninsula Power.
However, a pitch inspection at host venue AJ Kelly Park early Saturday morning concluded the sodden surface would not hold up to the heavy workload expected from the day’s four fixtures.
Over 60mm of rain has fallen in the past 24 hours in the Redcliffe area with further rain predicted over the weekend.
A decision is yet to be made by tournament organisers as to how the cancellations will affect the competition group tables, with the highest placed teams set to meet in the Final on Saturday, February 14.
Elsewhere, Brisbane City's scheduled friendly with Sunshine Coast Premier League outfit Kawana SC has also been called off due to the weather.
