PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland Womens newcomers Souths United got into the AFC Asian Cup spirit this week by welcoming visiting national teams to Brisbane.
Souths juniors – including players from the club’s PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland teams as well as community sides – served as part of the welcome for national teams from Saudi Arabia, China, Jordan and Iraq as they arrived in the Queensland capital.
The official welcome included indigenous dance performances, while Souths players greeted and waved national flags for each of the visiting nations.
The Souths player also made the most of the opportunity with the chance for photos and autographs from some of Asian football’s biggest stars.
Souths United President Tracey Confessore said it was a fantastic opportunity for the club's players to feel connected to the world game at the highest level.
“As the week went by we enjoyed some excellent interaction and appreciation by these teams, players and officials,” Confessore said.
She added that the club was particularly taken with the Jordanian team and their coach Ray Wilkins.
“Jordan has made 30 more fans from today as they were awesome in their welcome and interaction with players,” Confessore explained.
“Souths United would like to thank FFA, FQ, Asian Cup organisers and the Asian Cup national teams of Saudi Arabia, China, Jordan and Iraq for allowing our players and parents this fantastic opportunity.”
“We wish all teams the very best in the tournament and we hope all visiting teams enjoy their stay in Australia and the experiences of being part of this event.”
Souths aren’t the only PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland participants making the most of this once in a generation opportunity, with Perry Park – home of Brisbane Strikers and administrative headquarters of Brisbane Roar – serving as an official training venue during the tournament.
The AFC Asian Cup kicks off tonight with Australia’s own Socceroos facing off against Kuwait at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium.
Kick-off is scheduled for 7PM (Queensland time) with the tournament’s opening ceremony to commence at 6:30pm (QLD time)
Queensland's first match of the tournament - at Brisbane Stadium - is between Saudi Arabia and China PR. Kick-off in that match is scheduled for 6pm (QLD time).
