FNQ FC Heat continue building ties with the far north Queensland community in the off-season, taking part in a cancer charity walk on the weekend.
Heat’s Senior Men’s side rallied to support The Sandra Cadorin Wish Foundation, donating time and money as part of the Walk 4 Brain Cancer held at Cairns’ famous Esplanade on Sunday.
The call to arms for the event came from long-time FNQ football servant Jamie Carroll, who maintains close personal ties to The Sandra Cadorin Wish Foundation.
Heat captain Tamas Maffey-Stumpe said the entire Heat club recognised the importance of giving back to their community via charity and other events.
“A lot of the engagement is driven by the club but the difference with this event is that this was really driven by the players,” Maffey-Stumpe said.
“I think there will be a lot more like it in the future because we have a good team unity and social conscience behind us.”
Maffey-Stumpe explained that the club strongly viewed itself as representing the state’s far north through a range of initiatives, including support for charities and school programmes.
“We see ourselves as more than just football players. We are part of this community and we want them to hopefully be a part of us as well,” he said.
“We need to give back to the community. We are role models for a lot of children because our players do clinics in schools and encourage local kids to get into football.”
Additionally, Maffey-Stumpe said bonding the team through community engagement events also delivered returns on the pitch.
“Last year saw a lot of individuals coming together from the local league and players who had played the year before and some imports, so it took us a little while to come together,” he explained.
“But now we’ve got really good team unity behind us and that drives a lot of things that we do.”
“We do a lot of things together and we’re all really good mates off the field and that all helps for bringing the team together for next year,” he concluded.
