The Camden Cats have appointed current Western Sydney Giants Academy Coach Chris Hughes to the position of Head Coach for the 2015 and 2016 seasons.
Chris is a well-respected figure in Sydney AFL circles and brings with him a wealth of coaching experience to the Camden club.
Prior to his role at the Western Sydney Giants Academy, Chris coached at the Sydney Swans Academy, the NSW/ACT Rams Under 18s as well as Sydney AFL clubs North Shore and Balmain. Chris has also been at the reins of the Sydney AFL development side (under 23s) the last three years.
Hughes will take over the role from player/coach James Dixon, who led the Camden senior side to the Division 2 finals in 2014.
The new Head Coach says he’s excited about the challenge ahead with the Cats.
“I am certainly looking forward to this new challenge at Camden. The club has shown over the last few years that it is moving forward both on and off the field. That is something that I want to be a part of.”
“There is certainly a very skillful group of players here at Camden already. I look forward to taking those players and the club to the next level this coming season. The overall aim is to be successful come September.”
Season 2014 was a solid one for the Camden Cats, with both senior sides (Division 2 & 5) and their joint venture under 19s, the Macarthur Giants seeing finals action.
Camden Cats Club President Joshua Leys says the appointment of Chris Hughes as Head Coach is a significant step in the Cat’s history.
“We see Chris as an important piece of the puzzle. Camden has been putting in the hard yards off the field the last few years and appointing a Head Coach of the calibre of Chris Hughes is an important step towards the club tasting premiership success.”
Leys also believes that the Camden club is one to watch over the coming years.
“Camden is in one of the largest growing metropolitan areas in Australia and the club plans to be one of the largest and most successful clubs over the next decade in the Sydney AFL.”
“We have a great committee, strong supporter base, terrific sponsors and most all a fantastic club culture at “The Cattery”. Everyone at the club, including Chris Hughes has one goal, winning a premiership in 2015.”
Pre-season training for the Camden Cat’s 2015 season gets underway on Tuesday 11 November. Training is held at Camden’s home ground at Fairfax Reserve, Harrington Park on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7:30pm.
