A fantastic season for our Sydney Uni Rainbow, Prems, Colts and NEAFL teams wrapped up on Friday night at the clubs Presentation Dinner at The Star Room in Darling Harbour. The boys came dressed to impress with anticipation high for all teams in the lead up to the announcement of the major awards of the evening.
The evening got underway with the Division 5 Platinum’s taking to the stage first. The coach of the platinum’s Nigel Tao got the festivities started by announcing the Platinum’s major awards. Paul Oscar capped a fantastic season up forward winning the medal for the Div 5 leading goal kicker. Al-Karim Madhavji also impressed wining the coach’s award and the Best and Fairest was closely contested with Martin Ring winning the Div 5 Best and Fairest and Scott Walker becoming the Runner Up best and fairest.
Next up was the Division 4 Gold’s with their coach Ben Hunter. Ben recapped what was a solid year for the Gold’s before announcing the awards for the year. Alex Harmer took out the Div 4 Best and Fairest with Paul Chidrawi winning the Runner up Best and Fairest. Roger Snodgrass kicked his way into the Div 4 Leading goal kicker award by kicking an impressive 50 goals (which also saw him become the divisions leading goal kicker) and Nick Bailey earned the Div 4 coaches award with his hard work and dedication throughout the year.
The Division 3 Reds awards began next with captain Kyle Parker taking to the stage. In what was a successful season for the Reds there were plenty of well-deserved awards. Jack Edwards took out the Fintan O’Connor Medal for the Division 3 Best and Fairest for the Reds with Tom Whitaker taking out the Runner up Best and fairest, Matt Whitaker winning the Coaches award and Gabe Robbie winning the leading goal kicker with 48 goals to his name.
Coach Adam Clark of Blues was the next one up to the microphone to announce his team’s awards. The Blues had a fantastic year winning back to back Premierships in Division 2. This was a great effort from the boys and it was well deserved after an amazing season. Ryan Kennedy toped a stellar season in the Blues with the Laurie Kirwin Medal for the Blue’s Best and Fairest. The other awards given to the Blues squad were the Runner up Best and Fairest award going to Michael Higgins, the Coaches Award being received by Rohan Macpherson and the leading goal kicker being won by Jeff Melville with 27 goals.
The U19 Colts awards were also a memorable part of the evening. Coach Paul Markou took great joy on presenting The Jason McLennan Medal for the Best and Fairest Colts player to Vincent Barwick. Other Colts players that were recognised on the night include Nathan Carter winning the Runner up Best and Fairest, Will Combe winning the Colts Coaches award, Nathan Carter winning the players player and Nik Dale taking out both the best first year colt and the Colts Leading goal kicker with an impressive year in front of goal with 27 goals. What a fantastic year for the Colts.
Anton Turco and the Premier Division boys capped a great season at the Presentation Night by honouring the out-standing members of the 2014 team. Jack Casperson won the Harvey Gordon Medal for the Best and Fairest Player in Prems as well as the Players Player. This was a great effort by Jack and was a great reward for all the effort he has put in both on and off the field. Other Prem’s that were rewarded for a great year were Glen Smith who won the Runner Up Best and Fairest, Lachlan Maples who won the Premier Division Coaches Award and Erol Sertbas who took out the Development Award.
As anticipation grew to see who would win the NEAFL awards some of the clubs outstanding personalities were awarded Outstanding Contribution or Life Membership awards. As recognition to their services to the club over a number of years Alex Lee, Haydn Karutz, Tom Ayton, Sam Power, Gus Stephenson and Matthew McCutcheon were awarded Outstanding Contribution Awards for their efforts. In addition to this SUANFC added 2 Life Members to the club. These were to Adam Clark and Roland Wood. They have strongly deserved these awards and we would again like to congratulate our new life members in joining some elite company. As well as this, outstanding clubman Michael Murray won the 2014 Club Person of the year and our Sydney Uni Colts Player Jack Hiscox was recognised and presented with a Plaque in becoming an AFL Draftee after being Drafted by the Sydney Swans with pick 36 in the 2014 National Draft. Congratulations Jack!
With the NEAFL Best and Fairest announcement close, the last of our medals were awarded to players across all grades of SUANFC. Daniel Potts won The Best First Year Player award, Erol Sertbas won the 2014 Rising Star, Andrew Holmes won the Best Player in Finals, Sam Sleigh won the most improved player, Mitch Harmer won the Will Macbeth trophy for the Young Club person of the year and Jacob Derickx won the Col Keeble Medal for the Most Consistent Player. Well done guys on fantastic individual seasons.
The room received constant updates on the NEAFL Best and Fairest table throughout the night with it always being a close run race. In the end Jake Derickx and Tim Barton tied on 31 Best and Fairest points to both become joint winners of the Tim Driscoll Medal for the Best and Fairest NEAFL player. Both Jake and Tim had a fantastic year in our NEAFL side. A very good season from Matt O’Dwyer was rewarded on the night and earned him the Runner up Best and Fairest. The NEAFL Coaches Award was also well deserved being presented to Matt Powys. The final awards for the NEAFL boys were the SUANFC Scholar of the year which was awarded to athlete and keen student Tim Barrett and The NEAFL Players Player was won by the joint winner of the Best and Fairest winner and team Captain Tim Barton. Well done on a great year to our NEAFL boys, we will be a force to be reckoned with next year.
