Demons cap off perfect campaign
In their debut Under-17 Youth Girls State Championships, the Party Hut Darling Downs Demons have taken out the AFL Queensland Division 2 title, undefeated.
It was the perfect campaign, with the Demons girls winning all five games in impressive fashion.
The DD girls kicked off the State Championships with an impressive 26 point victory over the Townsville Eagles and continued the winning formula on Friday afternoon with a 19-point win over rivals Wide Bay. In very hot conditions on Saturday and two games, the Demons girls were tested but showed their class with a big 71 point win over Mackay and followed that up with a 24 point over division 2 favourites Capricornia.
Round Robin Results (2 x 20minute halves)
Game 1: Darling Downs 4.2 (26) def. Townsville 0.0 (0)
Game 2: Darling Downs 3.1 (19) def. Wide Bay 0.0 (0)
Game 3: Darling Downs 10.11 (71) def. Mackay 0.0 (0)
Game 4: Darling Downs 5.2 (32) def. Capricornia 1.2 (8)
Our girls then claimed the favourite’s title heading into the State Championships Division 2 decider on Sunday against Capricornia.
But to the Demons credit, they stuck to their structures and continued to play their brand of football, which set up the debut State Championship title and in impressive fashion.
The Demons girls ran out 7.11 (53) to 1.3 (9) victors over the central Queensland girls in front of a massive crowd at Yeronga AFC. Coach Jeff Neumann was very happy with the girls performance, not only over the 4-day championships but in the lead up as well.
"Just like all the other regions, we started from scratch," Neumann said.
"We wanted to give the girls the best environment to succeed and get the most out of their experience within our program."
"At the first training session the message was clear, work hard, stay disciplined and work as a team and you will be rewarded."
"Well the girls got their reward and we believe we have taken youth girls footy to the next level," Coach Neumann added.
Coach Neumann also said it wasn't anyone particular player that led the Demons, it was an entire team contribution.
"Our greatest asset was that we didn't just have one or two players lead the way, it was an entire team contribution and a credit to the players," Neumann told DarlingDowns.AFLQ.com.au
"I would expect the Darling Downs to have a good showing in the State squad of 50, we have some very, very talented youth girls in our region."
Rookie player and Fairholme College student Alice Mason was awarded the Darling Downs Most Valuable Player by AFL Queensland after a standout carnival.
More to come.
