Over 50s by Burchie
Certainly another year and a more attractive venue makes all the difference. This time last year the 50s headed to Darwin with 13 enthusiastic players but you didn't need to be Charles Dickens th know we didn't have Great Expectations.
This year we marched into Adelaide wit h27 players and selection headaches. Not a bad situation to be in. Plenty of first time QLD Carnival players joined in and enjoyed a great week of footy for fun botn on and off the ground.
Previous carnival results saw us in Div 2 against 5 other States and with a strong squad we went in confident.
Match 1 saw us take on and demolish a Vic Metro side 21.11.137 to 1.0.6. Well lead by Captain Sully and VC Billy we dominated every line and sent a clear message to the rest of the Div that we were the team to beat. Billy kicked a lazy 6 with Foxy chinimg in with 4 to be the leading goal kickers on the day. Backline lead by Caspa did not concede a point with their only goal a scrappy affair at best.
Surprise packet, the professor Bruce Lowth and Little Pete from the Sunny Coast represented us in the Drop Kick and Sprints. Bruce after dobbing them from 50 metres succumbed to the pre-race pressure of favouritism and fell short, while Pete came up against Usain Bolt and almost caused a boilover.
Match 2 had us pitted against NSW and a similar result followed, 15.12.102 to 1.1.7. Again a great team effort and afte 2 matches the well laid kick in plans from points out had Cookie at fullback with 1 stat to his name. Great kick it was!
The two match results had us in the final against Tassie which was always going to be the main event. We jumped out of the blocks playing some great early football setting the tone. GD across the HB, the Mids in Pawso, Sully and Whitey and the Wings in Flash and Dekka laid the platform for a first half lead of 5.3.33 to 0. As expected Tassie came back at us in the 3rd quarter with a couple of quick goals and they got their backs up but with Dekka floating across the backline as a loose man their attacks were repelled. The match was fought out to the end but we prevailed 7.8.50 to 4.2.26. Billy and Judy kicked 2 each with Pawso, Flash and Foxy 1 each.
Fitting result for a very good team that showed discipline and were prepared to play team first footy to achieve the prize and great to see everyone walking around at the presentation night wearing their winners medal proudly. Very hard to single out individuals as the whole team performed well. Congratulations to our All Australians David Sullivan, Paul White and Derek Delany.
Best off field award goes to MT and a big thanks to Tank for taking on the Team Manager's role.
All the talk is now focused on Tasmania next year and going back to back this time in Division 1. With the new players spreading the word that the carnivals are a great week to join in with blokes we play against, get to know them and gelling as a team unit to play for Qld, we can really look forward to more success.
So again a huge thanks from me to the whole team for a successful and very enjoyable week.
