Over 35s by Harms
The 35s had a tremendous carnival with 10 legitimate 35s players and the remainder was made up from the 40s age group. A huge THANKS to these players who without them we would not have been able to field a side. Their assistance was really appreciated and all the guys held their own and gave it their all. To Mini, thanks for this help, not only as a player but assisting me to learn where best to play his guys. Also thanks to Aps for his hard work as the Team Manager - he is really the ugliest man in Masters but by god he does a great job for his teams and State - an awesome effort mate and big thanks from us all.
Vic Metro and SA were playing in the Div 1 comp, which left us to paly Vic Country on the 1st and 3rd days with the winner taking out the medallion and combining with Vic Country on the 2nd day to play Vic Metro and then SA.
We played Vic C on the first day and after some really strong and encouraging signs we walked away with a 7 point victory. Considering the lads had only just come together, not only in their own age group but also the 40s helping out, we banded together and nutted out a great win. Having Killer, Croz, JR, Peachy, Webbie and crew all from the same region helped and they really lead the way wit htheir attack on the footy. Then we watched as Nimmo and Hoops came on towards the later stages of the game and we were home!
Day 2 saw us combining with Vic C and taking on SA in the first game which saw us walk away with a commanding win and all our players in the mix. With only an hour break and then back to take on Vic Metro, we ran out of legs but never stopped showing the true QLD spirit.
Day 3 saw us back to take on Vic C again, and with only having to lose by 7 points to take out the medallion on %, we were all very confident. By half time we had what seemed an insurmountable 28 point lead, with our players really attacking the ball and not giving any of their players any easy possessions. Not to be unfortunately, and in a very spirited comeback, Vic C bounced back into contention, not through a lack of trying by our lads, but they just lifted a gear we couldn't match. Don't know who or what we did wrong, the 4 x 50 metre penalties did not help, but we were certainly under the pump, and in the dying minute of the game Vic C kicked a goal from the boundary to sink us, winning by 12 points. Nimmo and Hoops really played hard good footy and were well rewarded by being announced All Australians along with Killer from the Bald Eagles.
QLD also took out the 35s Sprint Race, with Nimmo again starring and leaving all in his wake - well done mate.
A big thanks also to our Captain and Vice, Croz and JR - you guys showed just how to lead a team and should both be very proud of your efforts.
As we have said many times post Carnivals, QLD really does hold their own when we come up against the other dominant AFL States, and this year was no exception. I know that with the disappointment that followed from our close loss, all the current 35s lads will be back next year in Tasmania to give it their all. If we can get early and full commitment from some othe other legitimate 35s teams out there, I have no hesitation in saying we can travel to Tasmania in 2015 with the real prospects of taking out the medallion and showing the big boys just what we can do when we band together with the same common goal.
