Manly-Warringah
Final position
First- 17 wins, 1 loss
Snapshot
It was another dominant year for the defending premiers. Their only loss came in Round 11 at home against St George. In hindsight, this acted as a spur for the GIANTS who would earn the first weekend off after again finishing minor premiers. They overcame an early scare to run over Pennant Hills in the Semi Final to qualify for the Grand Final. They were clinical against the same opposition in the decider, winning by 46 points.
What worked
Close to everything. Got stronger with the acquisition of Brayden Fowler as full-forward and James Brain to an already strong midfield division. Had an unbelievable nine (including Leigh Brain as coach) representatives in the AFL Sydney Team of the Year. Clearly boasted the best attack and defence in the competition.
What failed
Not alot to be honest. Injuries threatened to be the GIANTS greatest opposition in 2014. The casualty ward included (not limited) at various stages: Robertson, Koch, Bosschieter, Lynch, Graham, Kilpatrick- all walk-up starters in most Premier Division outfits.
MVP: Connor Pettersson
The most eagerly anticipated Best and Fairest count will take place on the northern beaches. Pettersson would start favourite courtesy of his superb season in the midfield which saw him finish runner-up to Alex Goodall in the Phelan Medal count. He is tough on the inside and is also blessed with pace and the ability to dispose at a high level of efficiency. He will be challenged for the Marston Medal but a host of GIANTS which is testament to their even spread. (Editors note: James Brain claimed the Marston Medal after this review was completed)
Surprise packet: Jimi McDonald
McDonald played half the season in Premier Division last season and started in the Reserves in 2014 but worked his way into the senior side as a midfielder/wingman and ended up playing 15 games for the GIANTS, including their Grand Final win.
Low point
It was a small hiccup but the GIANTS loss to St George in Round 11 where they managing 5.16 in difficult conditions spoiled what would have been a perfect record for 2014.
What do they need to improve?
Not much they can improve on after back to back Premier Division flags. Retention will be the key for the GIANTS who possess a well-rounded roster. Can they hold onto star recruit Fowler along with Armitage, Brain and Pettersson who are the source of significant offers locally and interstate?
Grade: A+
It is another A+ rating for the GIANTS in a near-flawless season. They have by far and away the best depth in the competition and probably could handle the loss of a star player or two- even though they would love to retain all in search of a three-peat in Premier Division and five successive premierships for their Senior side (including Division One premierships). A serious challenge beckons next year with East Coast Eagles dropping back their senior side to the Premier Division competition.
