The Wash-Up: Lockyer Valley Demons
Lockyer Valley were another club to secure a brand new home ground in Cahill Park on the eastern side of Gatton and the club is slowly building the new home into one of the premier facilities in the region.
Senior Coach Michael May was awarded the AFL Darling Downs Club Volunteer of the Year after his tireless efforts with the Demons in 2014. Star junior Ashley Britton was one of three winners of the Under 14 Best and Fairest, claiming his first Col Wells Medal. Britton's win was also the Demons first league best and fairest since their inclusion in 2010.
The clubs Under 12's were the most successful side this season, reaching the McDonald's Trophy finals in the Elimination Final.
Best and Fairest Winners
U12's - Ethan Shipston
U14's - Ashley Britton
U16's - Jacob Schroen
PREDICTIONS Senior Best and Fairest Winners
Women's - Monique Gould
Div 1 - Sam Hegarty
The DEMONS Gun
Sam Hegarty - An outstanding season from the second year Demon and a leader in the making. Hegarty was an absolute rock at fullback and showed why he was such a talented junior for the East Stingers. Next Demons Captain and a lock for the clubs 2014 Best and Fairest, surely.
Keep an eye on
Madison Schroen - At just 10 years of age, Schroen has shown she is a player to watch. In just her second season of footy, Madison has developed into a quality rebounding defender and with only 25-games in her young career, she has nothing but improvement. Keep an eye out for this female football star.
Under 12's Review
The clubs most successful side of the season, appearing in another finals campaign but unfortunately cut short in week one to the grand-final bound Highfields Lions.
Shipston and Liddicoat stood out as the most impressive players all season, however Madison Schroen, Seth Jones and Robbie Gillett all had fantastic seasons. Their record of 8 wins and 6 losses, was impressive and the Demons are a side to watch going into 2015.
Their exciting brand of footy, was a game plan most sides couldn't much when they were at full-flight. Justus Liddicoat was the highest placing Demon at the AFLDD Peltz Medal count with 14 votes in equal 8th.
Under 14's Review
With 4 wins and 12 losses, the Demons 14's weren't as successful as the Under 12's but finished the season with their heads held high.
Ashley Britton was the stand out individual taking home the Col Wells Medal along with runner-up in the Darling Downs Crows best and fairest vote count. Britton was also the top goal scorer for the Dees with 37 majors for the year.
Jacob Wood, Wade Bannon and Joshua Watts also had some very successful seasons. Joshua Watts also capped off a brilliant off-field year, named the Lockyer Valley Demons Junior Volunteer of the Year.
Under 16's Review
The Demons 16's were so close to another finals campaign but unfortunately fell just short, finishing in 5th position with 6 wins from 14 starts.
It was an up and down season, with the Demons struggling for consistency and stringing victories together. However the Demons were able to put together five of their six wins with 80+ point victories. Demons gun Jacob Schroen was the highest finisher in the Jack Barry Medal for AFL Darling Downs.
Schroen finished on 17 votes, just 3 votes shy of the winner.
Women’s Review
The 2013 Grand-Finalists probably had a year to forget but showed promising signs towards the end of the 2014 season. Monique Gould was by far the stand out Demons in 2014 but was well supported by the ever consistent Chantelle Britton and Brooke Creighton.
Gould and Britton also were a part of the inaugural AFL Darling Downs women’s representative side.
With a 2 win, 9 losses and a draw record for the 2014 season, the Demons will no doubt hit the off-season with plenty of enthusiasm and reach the heights of 2013 once again. Their round 1 opening victory over Goondiwindi by 2-points was a fantastic result and the Lockyer Valley’s most complete performance of the season.
Keep an eye on the Demons in 2015.
Division 1 Review
Unfortunately the Demons went winless in 2014 but compared to 2013 were a better side. They were well coached by Michael Mays and were able to get valuable game-time in to young stars like Aiden Cohen-Campbell, Jacob Schroen and co.
Sam Hegarty was by far the Demons best, leading from defence at all times.
Lance Shipston and Leigh Mackley were the Demons that played all 17 games in season 2014, while Peter Wein and now premiership Redback player Damian Morris were the most prolific in front of goals, as the leading goal-scorers.
Expect to see the Demons rise up in 2015.
