The Wash-Up: Chinchilla SUNS
In just their second season, Chinchilla took another step in their development with a very competitive season in the Under 12 McDonald's Trophy and an impressive Division 2 campaign.
They have taken massive strides in securing a new home at the Chinchilla Sports Ground and locked in long term sponsors. Continue their off-field success President and junior Jay Paget was awarded the AFL Darling Downs Club Administrator of the year for his tireless efforts.
Two seasons down and the SUNS are becoming a force.
Club Best and Fairest Predictions
U12's - Daniel Griggs
Div 2 - Cameron Percival & Jye Hartwig
The SUNS Gun
Carmelo Keating - Finished on 9 votes in the Peltz Medal count but an all-round player. Knows how to find the footy and uses it very well. At just 12 years of age, Keating is a name you will hear quite often in future seasons.
Keep an eye on
Cameron Percival - His season came to an agonising end mid-year after a serious lower leg injury. Percival nearly took home the Marj Shaw Medal at the league best and fairest vote count but was run down and finished 4th, not bad for someone who only played 10 of 19 rounds.
Under 12's Review
Chinchilla will definitely agree that it wasn't the most successful season when it came to results but overall the season was one that showed a bright future for the young SUNS.
Their season highlight came in round 16 when they defeated western downs rivals the Dalby Swans by 28-points at home. Keating and Aidan Goddard-Smith had terrific games in the SUNS biggest win of their clubs short history.
Carmelo Keating finished equal 14th in the Peltz Medal and also finished as the number one goal-scorer for his side. The young SUNS finished the McDonald's Trophy season with 1 win and 15 losses but most importantly they played the entire season with a smile on their face.
Division 2 Review
The SUNS narrowly missed onto on a maiden finals appearance by 4-points but after going through their debut season in 2013 with just the 1 victory, they finished with 7 wins for the season.
It was a roller coaster season that included nail-biting victories, agonising defeats and blow-outs going both ways. Their biggest win of the season was by 221 points over the Warwick Redback's, however on the other end of the scale their biggest loss was 201 points.
Season 2014 definitely had more highlights than lowlights and none more so than the SUNS round 4 win over Dalby in the western derby by 8 points. Cameron Percival tore the Swans apart but it wasn't until the final quarter that Chinchilla actually hit the front.
Prolific forward and go-to midfielder Kristian Muir kicked 54-goals for the season and claimed the AFL Darling Downs leading goal kicker award for Division 2.
Rep Star
Rising SUN in Knight became the first Chinchilla junior to be selected in a representative side, as the 16-year old Luke Knight walked the walk in the Darling Downs game against Wide Bay. With 3 senior games under his belt, no doubt Knight will become a star of the future for SUNS.
