Invariably the end of season means awards and we did give these out last Friday. We do not recognise the ‘best umpire’ as previously stated, this is a development league so we about encouraging umpires.
This year, with the rule changes, it was harder to start developing the first year umpires (all 28 of them), but we saw quite a few take to umpiring like ‘a duck to water’. One of those showed us he has great potential to continue, so he was umpiring Under 12’s regularly
BEST FIRST YEAR UMPIRE – TYRELL SINCLAIR
We have a miscellaneous award which can be changed each year depending on the umpires we have and what they do and what we feel needs to be rewarded. So you don’t have to be the best umpire to win an award. This year, we saw a couple of good umpires improve dramatically, which also saw them go from a green shirt to an orange shirt. The umpire that won this award showed great enthusiasm was given challenges and rapidly went up the grades showing great improvement, listened and developed. He is going to the SANFL Summer camp to try out.
MOST IMPROVED UMPIRE – JOSH HARDY
We found that at training there were a few umpires that came out each week, no matter what and set a standard for the others to follow. We also saw that they are improving and can go further.
COACHES ENCOURAGEMENT AWARD – JACK MILLAR
We have a good number of umpires that can handle the higher grades and are developing nicely. This lad ‘shot up’ over summer and has increased his fitness level by boundary umpiring. Luckily, he can field umpire and will be doing so at the SANFL next year (as well as NEMJFA). He has improved and has been very consistent this year.
THE GRAHAM SMITH AWARD (Donated by SANFL) – MATTHEW HERRMANN
This award is for an umpire who has been umpiring for a few years, that shows willingness, enthusiasm, consistency and has good values. This person has shown these values, has volunteered alot, helped out at training and on game day, has listened and improved whilst accepting without hesitation his appointments. He has the makings of a good consistent umpire as well as being successful in life. Following the footsteps of previous winners, payne Sowter, Alex Anderson and Luke Wittenberg:
THE SCOTT RANKMORE PEPETUAL TROPHY (Donated by Quentin & Michelle Rankmore & Daniel McNicol) – HAYDEN FIELKE
So, once again, thank you for all your help and hope that you enjoyed your year with us. We all hope to see you again next year as well as coming back after a break.
