As another football season draws to a close, the final day of competition has arrived for AFL Sydney with Premier Division Finals here at Blacktown International Sports Park.
In an extraordinary result, eight clubs will compete for the four premierships on offer, capping off another fantastic season in Sydney’s premier AFL competition.
It’s been an exciting year of football for everyone, and well done to those who still remain at the business end of the season.
Each year we see AFL Sydney evolve and improve, and we are committed to ensuring that the competition remains a high quality league at the fore of our football community here in NSW/ACT. Our representative football program was a highlight this year - which included the first ever women’s team playing under the AFL Sydney banner. Over the June long weekend both senior teams travelled to Canberra to take on AFL Canberra at Manuka which resulted in two great wins for the Sydney sides.
We’ve seen six Premierships already decided for 2014; congratulations to all the clubs involved, in particular to the winners of the Women’s Division 1 – Sydney University. It was a fantastic weekend of football out at Blacktown, and all the clubs who were involved should be commended for the quality of the matches and the way they were conducted.
Congratulations to Blacktown (Division Five), UTS (Division Four), Randwick(Division Three) and Sydney Uni (Division Two) who claimed titles over Penrith, Wollondilly, Penrith and Blacktown respectively.
Today looks to be another fantastic day of football, and the rematch of last year’s Premier Division Grand Final between Pennant Hills and Manly will no doubt be an exciting contest. Manly-Warringah, in their first year as the GIANTS, have continued their stellar run in Premier Division in just their second year of inclusion. Pennant Hills will be buoyed by the inclusion of Phelan Medallist Alex Goodall, awarded earlier this week, who will look to cap off his milestone year with a big win.
The finals race for Premier Division came down to the final game of the season when the East Coast Eagles upset UNSW/ES to bundle them out of finals and give Sydney University fifth position, a testament to the genuine competitiveness of the league.
The AFL Sydney Women’s competition went from strength to strength in its second year of multiple divisions. Sydney University prevailed in a tightly-fought contest with UNSW-ES in the Premier Division Grand Final, which exemplified the skill, athleticism and toughness of the women’s game. Sydney University followed on from their victory with midfielder Stephanie Walker taking out the Premier Division Best & Fairest at the Phelan Medal presentation earlier this week. Southern Power won the local derby over the Wollongong Saints to earn them the Division 2 Premiership for 2014, in another enthralling encounter.
A very exciting day of football is ahead of us and I look forward to watching all the action from the stands.
Thank you also to everyone who has played a role in making this season a success - players, supporters, club sponsors and the countless volunteers that go into running a club. Your contributions are vital to the health and success of our wonderful game.
