AFL Darling Downs life-member Heather Green has been awarded the inaugural AFL Queensland Woman of the Year award at the 2014 Grogan Medal.
Green who thought she was going to the awards night to pay tribute to another worthy woman, was suprised when her named was announced she told the Chronicle.
"I was in shock because I thought I was going down to applaud someone else winning it," she said.
"I'm really blown away. It's humbling and I was proud.
"I was really appreciative of it. You don't expect anything like that when you're a volunteer."
It was a 'punt' the 2013 life-member inductee took, almost 27 years ago now starting out as a water-carrier at Coolaroo AFC. Fast forward and Heather now plays a pivotal role in the day to day running of the entire competition, across both junior and senior.
The best and fairest award for the women's competition, is named in Heather's honour as the Heather Green Medal.
Heather has done just about every role you can think of at community club and league level and would be lost without footy.
"I don't know what I'd do without it," Green said.
After many years, helping grow our great game as a volunteer, Heather is a deserving winner of the inaugural AFL Queensland Woman of the Year.
