Olympic FC goal machine Reuben Way is confident his club can take the game to Central Coast Mariners in tonight’s Westfield FFA Cup Round of 16 match.
Way, 24, joined Olympic from PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland rivals Redlands United for the 2014 season and has been in superb form for the Yeronga-based club, scoring a combined 25 goals in league and cup competition this year.
He said he was hoping to continue his form in front of goal against last year’s Hyundai A-League Finalists in the do-or-die cup clash.
“I think if we can get the ball in dangerous areas, then anything can happen,” Way explained.
“I’ve scored a couple of goals against A-League clubs while playing for semi-professional clubs before. I remember scoring a really good half-volley against Gold Coast United a couple of years back and against Roar the year before that as well.”
“Being a forward, you’ve got to do your job and that’s scoring goals,” he added.
“I try to make it a habit to stay positive and direct when I get the ball and sticking to my strengths.”
“It’s also a credit to the other boys like Terry Hughes, Jake McLean, Tim Smits and Danny Byrne, I score a lot of goals that come off their boot beforehand and put me in dangerous positions.”
Way explained that he was confident his Olympic teammates have what it takes to upstage their fully professional opponents.
“We’re a big game team and a lot of us have that experience where we know how to put in that extra ten per cent and make it happen. It’s one of the reasons I came to Olympic.”
“We know we’re in with a chance. It’s not anything new that a local team can upset an A-League team.”
“Adelaide City did it to Western Sydney Wanderers and so we are perfectly confident we can come up with a win against Mariners.”
Way’s performances this year in Playstation 4 NPL Queensland and Westfield FFA Cup earned him a trial with defending Hyundai A-League Champions Brisbane Roar.
He said he was enjoying the experience thus far and is set to continue the trial after his commitments with Olympic finish for the year.
“It’s definitely a step-up in fitness and training and mentality and I’ve been enjoying training with them,”
“I played National Youth Leauge for Gold Coast United a few years back, so I’ve had a taste of it and I’m really looking forward to going back there and training with them again.”
Olympic are joined in the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 16 by fellow PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland clubs Brisbane Strikers and Palm Beach Sharks.
