Cougars roar to Division 2 Premiership
University have claimed their eighth Adrian Jericho Shield Division 2 men's premiership, after defeating the South Burnett Saints by 49-points on Sunday afternoon in the AFL Darling Downs division 2 Grand-Final.
The Cougars stunned the Saints in the opening half booting 6 goals to 2, with South Burnett struggling to pierce the half back defensive line of University.
Sam Cooper, Brendon McDonald and Sam Purtill were generals across half-back, repelling numerous attacking raids by the Saints and having a hand in all 6 of the opening majors by the Cougars. Clinton Brown was the standout Saint in the opening half, running hard and leading by example.
It was much the same story in the second as the Cougars piled on 5.6 to South Burnett's 2.5 for the third and fourth quarters.
Centre-half forward Simon Choice for University was the main focal point inside forward 50 and finished with 2 goals for the game but it was his work-rate that stood out most. His ability to create space and draw numerous defenders brought other players into the game.
South Burnett’s Kieran Snow the Saints most influential in the defeat, with Adam Branch and Clinton Brown also the main contributors for South Burnett.
Veterans Norm Dempsey, Scott Sowerby and Geoff Bolton were among the Cougars best.
However, it was the youth of the Cougars that shone brightly on Sunday afternoon and the future looks a bright and successful one for University. Half-back flanker Samuel Cooper was voted as best on ground and awarded the Division 2 Best on Ground Medal.
Cooper was running free for a majority of the afternoon, racking up 30 plus possessions and played a grand-final to remember.
