Dalby Swans are the Premiers!!!!
The Dalby Swans have capped off a brilliant debut season in the AFL Darling Downs Women's competition, after defeating South Toowoomba in the Blackchrome Cup decider.
South Toowoomba booted an incredible haul of 12-behinds from their 16 scoring shots, as the accurate Swans made the most of their limited time in front of the goals kicking 7.2 in their 8-point victory. With both sides at full-strength, the Swans were outstanding for four quarters.
Dalby led from start to finish, as the rookie Swans ran out 7.2 (44) to 4.12 (36) victors to be crowned the 2014 Premiers.
Shaye Easton was awarded the Jeff Neumann Medal as the best on ground player for the Grand-Final. The star Swan collected 27 possessions from the game, with 12 contested marks in the Swans defensive half for the third and fourth quarters.
Women's leading goal-kicker Alison Gaur booted 3 goals including a team-lifting snap from deep in the north eastern pocket, which brought the red and white faithful to their feet. Coach Banks said during the week that they would do what they have done all season and not change anything up.
Dalby did that; they played their footy and slowed the speedy South Toowoomba outfit down. Creating numerous stop plays in the first half. However, it seemed the second half that the Swans had adopted the Bombers game style and took the game on.
The Swans players backed their own ability and at times beat the Bombers at their own game.
Heather Green Medallist and Representative Player of the year Isabelle Baldock was a standout for the Bombers in the grand-final loss. South Toowoomba players Chloe MacDonald and Savannah Ranford also had good games for the runner ups.
South Toowoomba was always in the contest and the final result could have gone either way. However, the Bombers inaccuracy in front of goal was their biggest enemy.
Match Day MC Jeff Neumann said, “The Grand-Final was played in the right spirits, with both sides players giving it their all."
"Both sides had their opportunities but as we all know, on Grand-Final day there can only be one winner, commiserations to South Toowoomba, and congratulations to the Dalby Swans.
"Today's Grand-Final proved, that the standard of female football in the region has improved dramatically in just 12-months and both sides have lifted the profile of female football not only to the football community but the wider community as well," Neumann added.
After registering late for the season starting their first month of footy with 1 win and 2 losses, to now be premiers is an outstanding achievement for the Dalby Swans.
