Cougars by a whisker
University have held on by one point to advance to the 2014 McDonald's Shield Grand-Final, after the roaring Tigers fell just short in the Cougars 5.10 (40) to 6.3 (39) victory.
It was a game for the ages, as both sides struggled to gain the ascendency in the opening term. Both sides register just the one goal each of the opening; however the Cougars had numerous opportunities in front goal but were unable to kick accurately in the high pressure opening stanza.
Under 14 McDonald's Shield leading goal-kicker Aiden Edwards kicked the first of the second quarter, to put the Tigers in front early.
Down by 2 points, University increased their running game and their match intensity lifted. The Cougars went on to kick the next 3 majors of the game with centre-half forward Harry Potter bagging a double and Emmanual Fallah chipped in with 1.
University led by 16-points at the long break.
The third quarter replicated the opening term, with Cougars having numerous opportunities to kick goals but only able to register one of them with the Tigers booting one as well.
Toowoomba kicked one straight, with University kicking one goal one for the quarter.
The Tigers needed to play one of their best quarters of footy for the year if they were to advance and they did just that. Toowoomba had 6 scoring shots to 4, kicking 3 of those 6, as the Cougars couldn't register a major. Aiden Edwards bagged another 2 for the morning and Brenton Dierke chipping with 1.
Unfortunately Toowoomba were agonisingly short, going down by 1-point to the University Cougars.
