Bombers gallant in defeat
Highfields kept the South Toowoomba Bombers goal-less until the final term, as the Lions held on for their 5.4 (34) to 1.6 (12) victory at Rockville Oval on Saturday morning.
It took only 60-seconds for the Lions to register their first goal of the Preliminary Final through Matthew Holt. Riley Ernst was the only other goal scorer for the opening stanza, late in the piece with the Bombers only able to register 2 behinds.
Highfields were again the only goal-scorers for the second term, with the Lions registering only a single goal through Laurence Profke.
It was a low-scoring defensive style game in the third quarter with both sides playing a man-on-man game plan. Majority of the action was between the 50 arc's, however Highfields were the only side to impact the score-board with 2 behinds.
Down by 16-points going into the final term, South Toowoomba needed to be the first goal-scorer of the fourth. And the script just went that way, as ruck Seth Hamm goaled in the opening minutes to lift the Bombers faithful and give his side an almighty boost.
The matches’ intensity lifted from that point, with everything on the line.
However, the Lions were quick to silence the Bombers with Blake Lane kicking the Lions fourth major of the morning. His goal was quickly following by another to Deklan Branson and with only minutes left of the clock, the Lions held on to victory and advanced to the 2014 decider against the University Cougars.
South Toowoomba can hold their heads high however and not once, ever gave up and pushed the Lions for all four quarters.
