Another chapter is about to be written in the fiercest modern day rivalry for the region, as the University Cougars take on Coolaroo in the Allied Pickford's Preliminary Final.
The rivalry was at its peak on Grand-Final day last year, with the Cougars leading for a majority of the decider of the men in navy. However it was a inspirational final quarter, a term for the ages that saw the Roos storm to victory and claim the clubs 8th premiership.
University got their redemption in Round 5, after their impressive 32-point victory. However, in round 15 the Roos notched up victory by a slender 14-point.
The Preliminary Final will be another epic chapter in the Cougars, Roos story.
Both sides have big game players, which love the big stage. The likes of Tom Rudolph (2013 GF B.O.G), '07 Holman Medallist Phil Dreise, premiership ruck Corin Sankey and the ever reliable veteran Andrew Parker.
For the Cougars the likes of Heath Gniel, Sam Banim, Joel Yosh, Cory Balnaves and Garry Wade are players that are made for the big stage.
However, this preliminary final will come down to the more-so unknown players, the ones that aren't talked about as much as the above stars. The likes of Uni's Ashley Harley, Rick Mackay, Connor Pyke and Tim Loch will need to have an impact early.
For the navy Roos, such players as Alex Horsfall, Luke Mason, Michael Langton and Michael Artis will all be important to their team’s success.
However, to win in finals every player that crosses the white line must have an impact and contribute in some-way. Whichever coach can get the most out of his 22, will go a long way to securing a grand-final spot in 2014.
One thing is for sure, this will be an epic encounter that will no doubt be close. And if the previous results are anything to go by, it will be.
