Hi Footy Heads, we are back with another review after a very interesting first week of the #AFLOFinals!
The Rebels have now been defeated, we all knew it was coming sooner or later but their Division 2 has progressed to a Grand Final. The Hawks are back up and running after demolishing the Roos, while the Gargoyles were sent home in a one point nail biting finish!
In the Women's Division the Wildcats travelled to Ottawa and won! What a weekend of footy in Ontario, here is my review!
Hawks 20.15.135 def Roos 1.2.8
While I do not know the full story, I am hearing whispers that the Roos had a number of players not qualify so could only field 15 against the Hawks on Saturday morning. Truth be told, they were never a chance to begin with but starting 3 short is going to make it even more difficult.
Shutts had a day out kicking 10 goals while Killa had 3 and Dullard 2 goals. Just too easy for the Hawks as they move on a Prelim Final next weekend!
Phantom Prediction - 1/1
Swans 10.11.71 def Rebels 8.7.55
I have been saying it for weeks but the Rebels were due to have a loss and after playing some average sides in recent weeks, they didn't respond too well to pressure from the Swans. It is fair to say the Swans got their wake up call the previous week against the Hawks and they came out firing. A narrow lead a quarter time was pegged back by the Rebels who went ahead at the half but could only manage 1 goal in the second to go down 16 point losers. Duffy, King and Murdoch had 2 goals each while Kozlowski had 3 for the Swans. Harcombe and Roffey had 2 a piece as the Swans took the chocolates in Toronto once again - this time without Stafford!
Phantom - 1/2
Blues 7.9.51 def Gargoyles 7.8.50
What a nail biting finish this one turned out to be! Early on the Gargoyles looked like they were not going to stand a chance and were down 5 goals to 2 at the first break. But they rallied in the second and really tightened the screws as they pegged back the lead and pushed to Blues to their limit. Ultimately, they couldn't get over the line in what was their third defeat of the season at the hands of the Blues.
Shorty kicked 3 and Lock but Storm was judged their best from half back along with Doc the regular vote getter. Matthews, O'Reagan and Dyer had 2 each for the Gargoyles with Millar judged their best.
Phantom - 2/3 in Div 1 #AFLOFinals
Division 2
Rebels 10.6.68 def Dingos 3.3.21
A bit of a surprise here as I expected the Dingos to win this one. The Rebels were down at Quarter time but never looked back and held the Dingos scoreless for the remainder of the game. Curtis kicked 3 with a best on ground for the Rebels and McMillain had 3 also. Rebels straight thru to the Grand Final.
Phantom - 0/1
Blues def Demons by Forfeit.
Pretty disappointing way to end the year for the Demons who didn't have enough show on the day. Feel for the guys who did show up.
Phantom - 1/2
Women's Division
Wildcats 5.10.40 def Swans 4.6.30
On paper it is hard to see how this actually happened. The Wildcats with 7 players travel to Ottawa and come away with a 10 point win in what could have been bigger had they kicked straight. Amazing effort from the Wildcats they go straight to yet another Grand Final appearance. Halliday kicked 3 of their goals and Vansevenant 2.
The Wildcats had most of their stars playing with Costanza kicking 2 of their goals. Missing Aimee Legault but still, with those sort of numbers you would expect a different result.
Phantom Predictions - 0/1
Blues 5.6.36 def Demons 3.1.19
A tough game was played out on Sunday afternoon at Humber where the Demons were taken down by Blues. Dare I say it but gone are the days of the High Park dominance, the Blues have constantly improved this season and have got themselves a shot at making the Grand Final next week.
Nester kicked 2 goals for the Blues and Cummings 2 for the Demons.
Phantom Predictions - 1/2 in Women's #AFLOFinals
That's it for this week, Footy Heads! Congratulations to the winners, looking forward to another week of #AFLOFinals. I will be back on Friday!
