The 19 Mooroopna Golf Club Rising Stars for 2014 have faced the judging panel.
The 12 gotafe GVFL clubs have nominated a rising star throughout the season, while wildcard nominations have been offered to seven other players before the final field was handed to the judges who included GVFL Under 18 Victoria Country Championship winning coach, Jason WELLS, who won his third title in a row at Deakin Reserve in May against Ballarat, one of his selectors and Swans thirds coach, Mario De SANTA-ANA, and myself.
We have each had a vote on a 3-2-1 basis and the winner will be announced at the MORRISON Medal count at the Sir Ian McLENNAN Centre at Mooroopna on Monday, September 15.
The HAYES twins from Euroa took the nominations to 19 when they were given wildcard nominations and once again they could not be separated, this time I’m talking football ability.
Will and JD in later rounds have been playing with Footscray in the Victorian Football League, having played earlier in the season with Euroa and last season with the Pies Under 18’s.
Will was a member of the victorious GVFL side which won the Victoria Country Championship game against Ballarat in May.
JD didn’t make the cut but played in the Victorian Country Under 19 side which thumped the Victorian metropolitan side to the tune of 10 goals, while he was one of the best for country.
While the 19-year-olds have played some good footy, there are plenty among the other 17 nominees who have had outstanding seasons with their clubs, making the judges’ job far from easy.
Interviewing these players along the way has been a pleasure with no one an upstart or a big head.
Whoever has their name or names announced on MORRISON night can recalled in the years to come, beating a field of young stars. Last season, Nick CALANDRO from the Swans won the award while his teammate Jarman IMPREY, who was a wildcard nomination, has gone on to play regularly with Port Adelaide.
Mooroopna Golf Club provides the football and netball rising stars with a $100 trophy and $250 cash prize.
