DarlingDowns.AFLQ.com.au looks at what it takes, in this two part series to make this year’s AFL Darling Downs Division 1 Grand-Final. This time we take a look at the 2013 Grand-Finalists, the University Cougars.
The Cougars finished the home and away season with a 13-3 record plus a draw from the round 1 washout. Those three losses came from Warwick at Reddies Oval, Goondiwindi at Riddles Oval and Coolaroo at home.
University are in the Qualifying Final on the back of their outstanding defensive unit, ranked number 1 in the competition the Cougars let in on average 45points per game. They also have quite a handy attacking outfit as well but Coach Melrose and the Cougars can thank the Corey Balnaves led defensive group.
The Cougars have also exposed opposition sides with their superior outside running game, ripping opposition sides apart all season.
Similar to the Redback's, University's potency in front of goals has stood out. With 9 players registering in the double digits for their season goal-kicking tallies the Cougars have numerous avenues to goal as well.
University haven't recruited as strongly as Warwick but have had a few handy additions to their list in 2014. Brother of former St Kilda player Brad Howard, Aaron has been a welcome inclusion into the starting 18 for University. Howard's ability to play key position at either ends and go into the ruck is a major factor behind the Cougars successful season thus far.
Add to this the return of silky left-footer Jarryd McCarthy and a very consistent season from rookie Andrew Richards, along with high impact seasons from veterans Heath Gniel and Garry Wade, the Cougars are prime to march straight into the decider.
Key Performance Indicators to reach the 2014 decider
- Don't change your defensive back 6 or 7, it has worked all year.
- Play Aaron Howard in the ruck
- Silence the Reddies faithful early
- Get the footy in your veterans hands, Gniel and Wade
- Let your forwards do their thing
