DarlingDowns.AFLQ.com.au looks at what it takes, in this two part series to make this year’s AFL Darling Downs Division 1 Grand-Final. First up are the 2014 minor premiers, the Warwick Redback's.
The Redback's finished the home and away season with a 14 - 3 record, with their losses coming from South Toowoomba, home and away, and University at USQ Baker Street Oval. Mother nature was on the Redback's side with the second and third placed Cougars and Roos receiving a 2-points from their round 1 washout.
If this wasn't a washout, the Reddies would of played in the elimination final last week, due to the teams below them with a superior percentage.
However, that doesn't matter anymore, the Redback's are hosting the 2014 Qualifying Final at home a venue they have turned into a hostile fortress. With just the one loss this season at home, visiting sides have found it difficult to play the large surrounds of the Jackie Howe Drive oval.
Add to this the electrifying red and blue faithful, the Redback's key to success is to bring in the crowd.
Warwick have also recruited quite well since 2013, with the added additions of players like Damien Morris (Lockyer Valley AFC), Benjamin Heppell (Coomera AFC), Daniel Brauer (Coomera AFC), Adam Stevenson (UQ AFC) and add to this the return of Brendan Iles from his stint with Springwood AFC and the assistance of 2013 premiership coach Nick Barker from Coolaroo, the Reddies have made their intentions clear.
Those intentions, win the flag now, this season, 2014.
However, it hasn't just been those new recruits that have led the way this year. Tyhe Clarkson and Coen Slatter have been ever consistent in 2014 and the key cogs behind the Redback's minor premiership season.
The Redback's have also found multiple avenues to goal this year, with 11 players registering goal-kicking tallies in the double digits.
Key Performance Indicators to reach the 2014 Decider
- Bring the home crowd into the game
- Keep your cool, on and off field
- Get the football into the hands of Slatter and Clarkson, they are running machines
- Don't have one focus going forward
Warwick captain Alex Cutmore spoke to the Warwick Daily News yesterday and he is confident about his sides chances.
"I rate our team as favourites on Saturday," he said.
"We promise an exciting game of footy between the two top teams," Captain Cutmore added.
