No place like home
Goondiwindi will face the reigning premiers Coolaroo in this year’s elimination final of the Division 1 Allied Pickford's Cup competition.
The Hawks didn't appear in the top 4 until after round 19 fixtures but Goondiwindi have the fire power to create havoc this final series. It definitely won't be smooth sailing for the reigning premiers, however playing at home will make the Roo's feel more comfortable.
Coolaroo narrowly missed out on a top 2 finish and the double chance by a mere 24% on the ladder.
The navy Roo's are the number one attacking team in the competition and the Hawks will have their hands full. With the likes of forwards Adam Green, Thomas Rudolph, Michael Casey along with midfielders Phil Dreise, Barry Janetzki and Corin Sankey the Roo's have a number of potential goal-scorers.
Goondiwindi has been exposed throughout the season in defence, with the Hawks under-size defenders struggling when stretched down back.
The Hawks finished the regular season as the fifth ranked defensive side, leaking on average 77-points per game. This would have been an area the Goondiwindi coaching staff would of worked on during the week.
Green and Rudolph will no doubt be watched closely as will Phil Dreise in the middle.
The question however, will Dreise be able to get through a full game with his hamstrings proving to be a barrier in the latter half of the season.
With the likes of Jeremy Leahy, Brenton Jardine, Brent Townsend and David O'Toole, Goondiwindi have more than enough fire-power to bring down the reigning premiers. Hawks big man Adam Scoble is a potential match winner, with the big Hawk bagging 32-goals for the season with his at times decoy role playing perfectly.
Playing Coolaroo at home will be no easy task for the Hawks, a venue that has proved to be a tough hunting ground in the past.
