Get behind our Cleo
When thinking of footballers, I think of Bruce Doull, Michael Tuck and Lance Whitnall. Not the best looking blokes around but battle hardened with grazes and battle scars from years in the game. Then there are these "lucky" people who through genetics, can play football and feature in fashion magazines.
UTS identity, Dean Ipaviz fits the latter, and is among the finalists in the Cleo Bachelor of the Year category. Like fellow clubman, Tom Chadwick; Ipaviz is in with a shot of winning the award.
In his bio, Danny read the following; "He's confident, well groomed and well-travelled; A chippie with a business head and a born leader with the humility and appeal of the everyday Aussie."

Demons hellishly competitive
A lot has been made of Manly-Warringah’s dominance since they have made the jump to Premier Division but for longetivity it is hard to go past Pennant Hills.
Over the last 20 seasons, Pennant Hills Premier Division side has only missed the finals on three occasions - 1997, 2002 and 2003 - and this week will compete in the end of season playoffs for an unbelievable 11th consecutive time.
But going to prove how hard Premierships are to attain, they have only claimed three Premierships- in 2000, 2006, and 2008. Over this period, they have finished runners-up four times.
Silly Sunday, Mad Monday
Last weekend spelt the end of the season for a number of clubs across the grades. With the end of the season comes Silly Sunday and Mad Monday celebrations. Our roving reporters witnessed the following celebrations;
The Campbelltown Blues had their traditional Silly Sunday at Ingleburn Bowling Club. With over $1500 in the kitty and a Superhero theme, the boys were dressed to impress. Captain America/skipper, Taran Etto set the early pace on the orange vodkas (Gen Y drink) which got to the better of him and by halftime he was asleep dreaming of 2015 along with Hamish Sherwood. Party Marty was in full voice as his guitar provided quality entertainment. The stayers, Slip Aaron Cracknell and Hot Diggler were last men standing as the Blues saw off the end of the season.
At Moorebank Magpies 'grub day,’ youngster Isaac Carerra was reported to have gone too hard, too early. Blake Pearce didn't rock up due to a very exciting ‘Star Wars Night’ with his girlfriend.
On the topic of Moorebank, Joe Vella has done a great job doing up a Youtube clip of photos of the Magpies in action this season. To view it, click here.
Jack Dickens watch;
On good authority we hear Southern Power player, Jack Dickens (aka Kenny Powers) was heard to say "let's go home" when it was still early. He has form on this as at Splendour In The Grass a few years ago; on the very first night, Dicko said "come on boys let's go to sleep" at 1am. Must be a favourite catchcry, Dicko!
Blank card
Danny was scrambling through the history books to see the first time two sides were kept goalless in the same round in Premier Division. This comes after Sydney University (vs Manly) and Campbelltown (vs St George) failed to kick a goal in wet conditions on Saturday. Danny has gone back as far as our records books allow and couldn’t find such an instance, but I have been wrong before!

Fight to avoid the spoon
Regardless of what level or sport you play, the one thing you want to avoid is the wooden spoon. Both Sydney Hills Eagles and UTS were locked in a battle to bypass the ‘spoon’ in the back half of the season in Premier Division. It was the Eagles with a strong last few weeks, including a final round win over the side placed fifth at the time in UNSW/ES, which not only relegated the Bulldogs to sixth but also the Bats to last place by two competition points. The Bats were stiff having led fourth-placed Western Suburbs in the dying moments of their final round clash.
It goes to show there is some light at the end of the rainbow for the two sides.
Double for Barnes?
Sydney University high flyer, Kelvin Barnes was the winner of the NEAFL Mark of the Year at the NEAFL Presentation Night on Sunday night. Could it be a double after his hanger in Round 1 for the Premier Division side against North Shore at Henson Park? Find out at Phelan Medal night on Monday 15th September.
Double trouble in the World Team
Last week we mentioned the exploits of Campbelltown’s contingent at the International Cup.
In more great news, UTS Shamrocks star, Lara Hilmi was named in the Women’s World Team, and UTS' Brendan Browne & Campbelltown's Peni Mahina in the Men's World Team.
Well done!
Spotted
- Dean Ipaviz was spotted at a Bondi newsagency offering up autographed copies of the latest Cleo's magazine (see page 9).
- Damon Colina has recently taken over a cleaning company as a second job. He has been telling all Bats 'you need to be cleaned!’
