BIG, BIG winners over the last week-end, despite Rochy having the smallest winning margin their win was probably the BIGGEST win given the Tigers had a few first picked players out injured. But with the outs they included one BIG in with Lochlan SIRETT being unveiled to Kyabram and GVFL supporters. The big fella kicked 2 goals in his second game with the Tige's having previously played the week before v Tatura. The computer states he is from Colbo but at this stage not much more is known other than he was pretty impressive. Grant WEEKS kicked 4 tot ake his season Home & Away tally to 87 - 13 off the magical ton with Echuca this week. Can he get the ton? I wonder what odds Huss's bookmaker friend Bill WATERGATE would be offering. It would not hurt to have a few dollars on especially as Rochy will go into this game absolute red hot favourites. Rochy got a way to a good start againt Ky to lead by 2 goals at 1/4 time, 20 points at 1/2 time. Both teams kicked 5 goals in the second half for Rochy to win by 17 points - 12.12 (84) to 9.13 (67). At one point in the final quarter Ky got to be only 7 points down but Rochy steadied. There is a saying going around that a team will learn more from a loss so if this is true Ky will be well primed and prepared for back to back flags.
These same people talking about a loss being a good thing have mentioned Benalla who won their 17th game on the trot at Euroa. Talk about a win - this was a monstering - 23.18 (156) to the Magpies 4.1 (25) - 41 scoring shots to 5! Josh MELLINGTON kicked 6, Alistair JACKA kicked 5 and was named the Saints best player; Nick WARNOCK kicked 5 as did Under 18 player Brodie WEBSTER. Nathan GILLILAND was again his teams best player supported by Andrew BELL, Robbie WOOD and Happy HARPER.
Saad SAAD kicked 8 for the Lions on their home ground against Mansfield to take his season's tally to 81 goals before they take on Benalla at the Rose City oval. You could name your own odds to for Saad to crack the ton and there certainly will be interest especially if this is the last game that Shane SCHOTTNER plays for the Lions. You can rest assured every player will give it there very best shot as both Saad and Schotty have been Champions for the Lions and for that matter the Goulburn Valley Football League. Seymour Coach Brent COLBERT was very pleased with his team's first half being able to keep Mansfield to just one goal. Braydyn GRENFELL, Tom FREEMAN and Matty O'KEEFE were named as the Lions best. David CLARKE kicked 3 for the Eagles and was named their best player along with Jamie CARNS, Adam BOSHEVSKI and Ben FAGAN.
Sonny WHITING kicked 11 for the Bulldogs against Echuca - this bag helped Tatura to score 26.20 (176) to Echuca's 7.5 (47). Tat had 9.4 on the scoreboard at 1/4 time - Echuca had not scored. Tatura were certainly strengthened with the return of A Grade players Billy KICKS, James WALL and Rian McGOUGH and obviously put the foot down with finals around the corner and went all out to make it it a big day for Paul KIRBY who played with 200th Senior game for the Bullies. Despite the huge score difference, Echuca never gave in and put in a real effort which draw admirable praise by some Tatura people. Coach of the Murray Bombers Andrew BRIGGS has played the last few games and has ran himself into form by kicking a couple of goals. Echuca's best were Tom STEVENS, Simon BUCKLYE, Matt POLLOCK, Kane MORRIS and Liam WILJINSON. Every Bulldog would have come into consideration to be named in the best players however Sonny WHITING got the nod along with James SULLIVAN and Shannon BROADBENT.
Shepparton United could have had a way bigger win over Shepparton at Deakin Reserve. The Demons were very inaccurate having 4.10 on the scoreboard at 1/2 time to Shepparton's 3.5 - United finally won an uninteresting sort of game 11.18 (84) to 6.10 (46). The highlight of the game was the performance of 19 year old Matthew BRETT who played a great game at centre half back on the dangerous Shepparton forward Daniel WILLIS and then go forward in the second half and kick 4 goals to be named the Demons best player. Shepp's M. BRETT (Mitchell) was named the Bears best player with Jake ALLEN and Ash HOLLAND. Youngster Riley MICHEL was also very good for Shepp.
The Swans look like they too mean business as they really jumped out of the blocks with a 9 goal 7 behinds forst quarter against Mooroopn at Mooroopna. Surprisingly, both the Swans and the Cats only kicked another 8 goal each over the next three quarters but really the Swans did control the game from start to finish. Final score was Shepparton Swans 17.22 (124) to Mooroopna 9.10 (64) Justin MADDERN and Jamason DANIELS both kicked 3 goals for the winners while Daniel LEWIS kicked 3 for the Cats, Charlie BURROWS and Kaine GREENING both kicked 2 for the Cats.
The finals come a week early for both Shepparton United and Mooroopna - it is a very simple equation. Whoever wins on Saturday continues - the loser will have played their last game for season 2014. And it is mothballs for the senior jumpers of Euroa, Seymour, Echuca, Shepparton and Mansfield.
Interest is certainly at a high level to see who claims the 6th spot on the ladder and to where Ky & Tat finish on the ladder depending on their clash on Saturday night. The game is at Ky; Ky are 4 points and a very healthy 9.4% ahead of Tat so for Tat to take Ky's 3rd possie on the ladder they will have to win by more than 30 goals.
There is some interest in the Under 18's finals conterstants as well with Shepparton having to defeat the Shepparton Swans and relying on Tatura to defeat Ky which just simply will not happen. One wonders when each of the Shepp based Under 18 teams, Shepparton, Shepparton United and the Shepparton Swans have not been in the finals. Must find out!
