Olympic claim psychological edge ahead of semi-final

National Premier Leagues: Capital Football
Round 18 – Review

Wednesday 20th August
FFA COE 0 Woden Valley 1 (David Carder 16’)

Woden Valley made sure they ended the National Premier Leagues: Capital Football season with a smile on their faces with their second win in succession as they defeated the FFA COE 1-0 at the Australian Institute of Sport on a Wednesday evening. Playing under the floodlights on the lush green surface of the AIS certainly appeared to agree with Woden Valley who produced one of their best performances of the season to claim a win and follow up their 3-1 away win at Tuggeranong United. Woden have now picked up twelve points in the second half of the season and will finish the campaign in seventh place barring an unlikely huge Monaro Panthers win over Belconnen United. The match itself was a cagey affair with the FFA COE having made a number of changes from their last encounter and their fractured opening was exploited by the visitors who hit the front in the sixteenth minute. The goal came from an unlikely source as young defender David Carder picked the perfect time to notch his maiden NPL goal. That gave Woden something to hold on to and they defended well, denying the FFA COE the space to trouble Jason Denham and, when the hosts did get past the back four, Denham was in good form. Woden threatened at the other end forcing Duro Dragecevic into a couple of decent saves in a game that had a distinct end of season feel to it.

FFA COE 4 (Jamal Reiners 5’, 20’, Jamie Dimitroff 66’, Jackson Bandiera 86’ (pen)) Tuggeranong United 3 (Matt Menser 32’, Muad Zwed 40’, Zac Munster 57’)
The FFA COE ended their involvement in the National Premier Leagues: Capital Football competition for 2014 by signing off with a victory by the odd goal in a seven-goal thriller with FFA Cup entrants Tuggeranong United. United, who had been drawn to face Hyundai A-League giants Melbourne Victory in the Round of 16 on Friday, started as if their minds were on that task as the home team came out of the blocks at a sprinters pace hassling Tuggeranong in possession and breaking sharply. It took the home team just five minutes to break the deadlock as lively forward Jamal Reiners stepped away from his man to slide a finish beyond the reach of Rowan Forbes-Shepherd. And it was 2-0 fifteen minutes later as Reiners repeated the feat, collecting a poor clearance from the United custodian to finish with aplomb. Tuggeranong needed a response and they got it with two goal in eight minutes before the break. Matt Menser headed the visitors back into the contest before Muad Zwed arrowed home from outside the area for 2-2. The turnaround was complete in the second half as Zac Munster raced away to round Duro Dragecevic to slot home, moments after missing a one-on-one. But the FFA was to have the last word as Jamie Dimitroff cleverly lobbed them level and Jackson Bandiera won it from the penalty spot.

Canberra FC 2 (Domenic Giampaolo 57’, James Field 66’) Canberra Olympic 4 (Oliver Wierderkehr 27’, Mark Shields 70’ (pen), 73’, Daniel Barac 90’)
Canberra Olympic heads into next weekend’s third versus fourth minor semi-final with a 4-2 win over Canberra FC under their belts and the psychological advantage of having inflicted a fourth defeat in a row on the fallen League Champions. FC’s ‘annus horribilis’ continued on Friday evening when goalkeeper Jakob Cole was forced to withdraw from the squad with a groin injury that could potentially end his season at the most inopportune time. That meant that youngster Shaun Burke was handed a first team debut and, in the main, he acquitted himself well in trying conditions. However he could little to prevent Oliver Wiederkehr opening the scoring in the 27th minute, the forward reacting quickest to slot home after Mark Shields hit the post. It was remarkable that Wiederkehr did score having only got married the day before! FC trailed at the interval but they turned the match on its head in the second half through quick goals from Domenic Giampaolo and James Field. Olympic wasn’t to be denied and their experienced strike force took over. Leading scorer Shields levelled from the spot with twenty minutes to play before striking from a free-kick only moments later to put the visitors in front. With FC aiming for a late equaliser Olympic caught them on the break and Daniel Barac rifled home a cracking fourth to seal the points.

Canberra City 0 Cooma Tigers 8 (Goran Josifovski 2’, Stephen Domenici 36’ (pen), 37’, 41, 68’, Iain Elliott 73’, Robbie Cattanach 87’, Francois Bangweni 89’ (pen))
Cooma Tigers put in a Champion display at Gungahlin Enclosed as they ended their successful National Premier Leagues: Capital Football season with a thumping 8-0 victory over bottom of the table Canberra City to head into next weekend’s finals matches in good stead. In the process Cooma extended their unbeaten run to fourteen matches and are the form side as you’d expect from the Champions. It took them barely a minute to break through the City defence as Goran Josifovski scored his 13th goal of the season to briefly gain possession of the Golden Boot. However, the final destination of that prize was to be the trophy cabinet of Stephen Domenici as the jet-heeled winger cum striker would go on to crash home four goals and end the season with sixteen strikes to his name, two more than Canberra Olympic goal-getter Mark Shields. Domenici opened his account here from the penalty spot and made it 3-0 less than a minute later. By half-time he has his hat-trick and the Tigers were out of sight. Domenici added his fourth in the 68th minute and Iain Elliott brought up the half dozen with seventeen minutes remaining. Robbie Cattanach got in on the act with his 13th of the season in the 87th minute and there was still time for goalkeeper Francois Bangweni to join the party, the Tigers shot-stopper entrusted with, and scoring, a last minute spot-kick.

Belconnen United 5 (Marty Raines, Jason Ugrinic, Cameron Reinhart, Kieran Mattress, Bernard Rene) Monaro Panthers 2 (Martin Deng, Caleb Cullen-Rua)
Belconnen United came from 0-2 down to see off Monaro Panthers and end their season with three more points in what was an exciting match at McKellar Park. A young Panthers outfit gave their more experienced opponents a severe fright and Den Ugrinic’s team had to dig deep to make sure that they entered next weekend’s Major Semi Final fixture with Cooma Tigers at this venue with a  modicum of form having slipped off the pace in recent weeks as injury and unavailability has hit their squad. Monaro was 2-0 to the god in the first half as they surprised Belconnen with the pace and ingenuity of their attacks as goals from Martin Deng and Caleb Cullen-Rua out the visiting team clear much to the disbelief of most of the watching crowd at the Blue Devils home. Any thoughts of an unlikely victory to end the campaign for Monaro were swiftly brushed aside however by an incredible second half display from the home team who, after a rocket from their coach at the break, turned into a different team in the second stanza. Goals from Marty Raines and Jason Ugrinic brought them level before further strikes from Cameron Reinhart, Kieran Mattress and Bernard Rene gave the score line an emphatic look that, arguably, the Panthers performance did not deserve.
