Who will make the gotafe GVFL finals?
It’s a ding dong battle to see who will be there in September with Rochester, Mooroopna and Shepparton United all wanting to play finals footy and all locked in tough encounters today and next Saturday.
The Demons dead heat with the Swans at The D last Saturday added further spice to the situation and caused the Dees to drop from the six and allow arch rivals Mooroopna in with a chance of playing finals. Today, the Dees play co-tenants, Shepparton, at The D and again the Bears have a chance to upset the apple cart by beating their neighbours who won the first round this season by 26 points.
The Cats last Saturday grabbed their opportunity to move into the six against the Bears and tomorrow they take on the Swans at Mooroopna.
Rochy are fifth and four points ahead of the Cats and six in front of the Dees but today they play the reigning premiers Kyabram who gave them a thumping in the first round. However, the Tigers showed plenty of G and D against Tatura last Saturday and they are determined to play finals footy once again for retiring coach, Peter WHITE, who will hang up the clip board at the end of a distinguished career which has spanned more than 30 years at the end of the season.
And so the show goes on with plenty happening at the bottom end of the six and some tough matches today, tomorrow and next Saturday.
Mr Magic, Tim LOOBY, should lead the Dees to victory against the Bears, who are trying hard but just lacking three or four accomplished players to help get them over the line. LOOBY turned on a cracker of a game against his former Swans side at The D and finished a sparking display off with six goals. He made it easy to select the Home Central Player of the Week Award but once again he needs his players to go with him all the way to make sure they get the four points against the Bears and prepare for their last game of the season against the Cats at The D.
Rochester will be home to Kyabram and despite getting belted early in the season, this will be a different side which takes on the Bombers today. It won’t be any easier but I believe the Tigers will put up a much better showing this time around but the Bombers have consecutive flags in their sights.
Tatura will return to the winner’s circle when they take on Echuca at Tatura today. The Murray Bombers have improved since the second round but the Bulldogs will be hurting after getting beaten by the Tigers and there’s another reason why they will want to win. Champion ruckman, Paul KIRBY, plays his 200th game for the Bulldogs and this great servant should be allowed to celebrate the occasion with a win.
Seymour are showing just how good they could have been all season had they not had so many injuries along the way. The Lions belted arch rival, Euroa, on Saturday with Saad SAAD kicking another six goals to take his tally to 73 for the season and again today he will boot a bag against Mansfield.
The Magpies are home to Benalla but the home ground advantage won’t be of any advantage against the boys from Benalla. The Saints have firmed with bookie, Bill WATERGATE, as favourites for the flag at evens, and the Pies are in for a hard day at the office. The Professor, Luke MORGAN, has his class of 2014 following his lectures to perfection and another four points will go their way today.
The Cats and the Swans meet at the cattery tomorrow in what should be a great game of footy. The Cats want to stay in the six and the Swans want to lift their game if they hope to win their first flag since 1970. The Swans won by 11 points in the first game for the season but this could easily be reversed if the Cats approach the game like the Dees did against their feathered friends last Saturday.
