The HAYES twins – Will and JD – are the latest wildcard nominations for the Mooroopna Golf Club Rising Star Award for season 2014.
The 19-year-olds are currently playing with Footscray in the Victorian Football League, having played earlier in the season with Euroa and last season with the Pies Under 18’s.
Will played with the victorious GVFL side in the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country Championships at Deakin Reserve, Shepparton, in May against Ballarat, while JD played in the Victorian Country Under 19 side which was coached by former Finley champion and now coach, Damian SEXTON.
The country boys disposed of the metropolitan side to the tune of 10 goals with JD one of the best for country. He had been in the GVFL squad for the interleague game against Ballarat but didn’t make the cut. Because of their similar achievements, I could not split their performances and included them in the wildcard nominations which will go before the judging panel along with the club nominations with the Rising Star, or in this case Stars, being named at the Morrison Medal Count at the Sir Ian McLennan Social Centre at Mooroopna on Monday, September 15.
The twins played the first game of the season with the Magpies along with their 23-year-old brother Ben against Mansfield at Euroa, celebrating with a comfortable win.
Of late they have been playing with the Bulldogs who easily accounted for Casey at the weekend and are certain to play finals.
Will said VFL footy was a bit quicker than GVFL with foot and hand skills needing to be quicker; however, the GVFL was a “great stepping stone for the next level.” The boys live with their mum, Pru, in Melbourne, while their dad, David, one of Australia’s leading horse trainers lives on the “farm” Lindsay Park at Euroa.
They are completing a Commerce-Chinese double degree at university and see their future in racing along with Ben, however, presently the boys a working hard at holding their place in the Bulldogs side and helping win a premiership.
