Well Footy Heads, we're one step closer to September action after an interesting Round 11 which consisted of three big margins and two relatively close ones - one being somewhat of an upset!
The numbers continue to be very short this month as teams struggle to get their best teams on the park. Is this to do with the International Cup? I really am not sure as not everyone is missing players but the numbers are still lacklustre. Here is my review of #AFLOrd11
Dingos 20.13.133 def Eagles 4.3.27
What can I say? It's been a tough year of the Eagles and wins have been hard to come by. Officially out of the race, 4 quarters left in the year now, they really want it all to be over. One of the old clubs in the league has got a lot of work to do in the off season to get some new blood in. A competitive first quarter, they were dominated by the Dingos who have no issue punishing teams if given a chance. Especially in a year like this where wins have been hard to come by. You have to enjoy the little things.
Butch even managed to kick 9 goals which is probably the most kicks he's had in a season in the last 5 years, let alone in one game. McKay continues to be the standout for his side and chipped in with 3. A great year from the skipper, on track for a Club B&F.
Phantom Prediction - 1/1
Swans 26.14.170 def Demons 1.4.10
Another team counting down the days until the end of the season the Demons have been struggling for numbers. With the Big Man Casey away, they have really lacked a target up forward to create options. Tinglin their only goal kicker in an open game played a 16 a side. Can you believe the Swans matched?
The Swans had bags kicked by Graham with 7, Stafford and Strahan with 5 and Bridges with 4 goals. Another big win by the Swans in their march to September!
Phantom Predictions - 2/2
Blues 10.13.73 def Wildcats 7.9.51
A gallant effort by the every improving Wildcats they gave the inconsistent... unpredictable... hard to read Central Blues a bit of a scare on their way to securing a position in the Top 6 in 2014. McDowall continued a great year for his new club with 5 goals while Digits and King pitched in with 1 each. A couple key players and they will be a formidable opponent in coming seasons.
The Blues relied on the usual to get the job done and without Shorty (5 goals) are definitely not the same side. The win gets them the much needed 4 points to give them 6 wins which will be enough to secure a place in the finals this year.
Phantom Predictions - 3/3
Gargoyles 14.8.92 def Hawks 10.12.72
The Hawks travelled to Guelph with only 16 players but 2 could not take the field due to the Australian restriction so they were forced to play with 14. The Gargoyles reduced their side but still played 2 extra which appears to have made all the difference!
The scoring shots were the same but the Gargoyles kicked the straightest and gave the Hawks a 20 point defeat which puts their spot in 3rd or possibly even 4th in jeopardy should they lose to the Swans in Round 12. Not sure what to say about the Hawks, they are not the same team and are propped by the Big 3 in Shutts (5 goals), Dullard and Killa (2 goals each).
Dyer was stand out for the Gargoyles with 5 goals while Maurer had 3 goals and Millen was best on. The Gargs coming into some good form at the right time of year. Must be Kerm back in the Coaches box?
Phantom Prediction - 3/4
Rebels 14.14.98 def Roos 3.4.22
A great report from the Roos match reporter describes a wet and windy day in Guelph with not a Gargoyle to be seen sticking around after their game. A game played at 16 a side due to Roos being short of numbers it was Cuzner again who lead from the front kicking 2 of their 3 goals and being all over the ground.
The Rebels show Verzyden and Osborne in their best while Murdoch had 4 goals, King 3, Bodnar and Love 2 goals each.
Phantom Predictions - 4/5 to finish #AFLOrd11
2XU Player of the Round - Round 10
Please excuse me fans but I did not include my player of the Round last week. Last weeks 2XU Division 1 Player of the Round was Tom Stafford of the Ottawa Swans with a 5 goal performance. Not his first great game of the year and not his last 5 goal haul - see Round 11. Congratulations Tom, we'll keep an eye on you on Awards Night!
2XU Player of the Round - Round 11
Despite some encouraging tweets from the Dingos Kennel in favour of Butch, this weeks 2XU Player of the Round is Shane Murdoch of the Toronto Rebels. He kicked 4 goals for his side against the Swans in some wet and windy conditions and is having a great season for the Rebels. Congratulations Shane
Womens
Swans def Demons - forfeit
Not a lot to say here, once again the Swans are forfeited to - this time for a game in Toronto. I am not sure if this is due to the Women having two teams at the International Cup but three forfeits received in one season by the Swans is quite sad. On the plus side it means they definitely finish on top.
Phantom Prediction - 1/1 by default
Wildcats 2.6.18 def Blues 2.4.16
A close game played at Mohawk Park on Saturday saw the Wildcats sitting a little short with only 8 ladies but still managing to get the win and put themselves in a position to steal top spot should the Swans have lost. Scott and Pepper kicked their goals as the stole a victory from the hands of the Blues.
The Blues numbers continue to look strong despite missing some key players. It was McCawley and Nestor who kicked the goals while Kelly-Witt and Thornhill were judged amongst their best.
Phantom - 2/2 in Women's Division Round 11
The Women's Division Home and Away Season is now complete and the Swans finished on top. 3 wins by forfeit certainly helped but congratulations nonetheless!
One more week of men's footy and we all get a rest (some longer than others) in the lead up to September. See you all on Friday!
