AFL Darling Downs are pleased to announce the following squad of 23 players to represent the region in the upcoming State Championships from Friday 24th October to Sunday 26th October in Brisbane at Yeronga AFC.
The Under 17 squad was selected by the program coaching staff over a two day trial period and AFL Queensland staff viewing school and club footballs games throughout the season. Club coaches were also involved in the process to provide feedback, with majority of coaches replying.
Coach Jeff Neumann was pleased with the final squad and states the Darling Downs are a region to watch the State Championships.
"It has been a tough couple of days and late nights selecting the final 23, one of the toughest selection jobs I have had," experienced coach Neumann told darlingdowns.aflq.com.au.
"Anyone of the 63 players who trialled could have made the side, however we can only take 23 to the State Championships and we all know we need a well-balanced line up.
"It is the first time the Darling Downs will be represented at the Youth Girls State Championships and I believe we will have a strong showing in October," Neumann added.
The side is well represented by both AFL Darling Downs clubs and schools from across the region; seven of the final twenty-three come from Toowoomba's Fairholme College including school-girls State representative Chloe MacDonald (pictured left with Jayne Finlay - Chloe right) who is listed with her club South Toowoomba AFC.
Goondiwindi Hawks rising star Felicity Ash is the youngest of the selected team, with ten top-age players selected, proving the well balanced mix across the side.
