Hail King Kef
Danny is a bit sentimental when it comes to ornaments of the game. UNSW/ES acknowledged their co-captain Peter Kefalas last weekend in his final game at the Village Green. His teammates saluted him in honour with a resounding win over Western Suburbs in Premier Division- he even celebrated by kicking a check-side goal from straight in front.
After 175+ games across 12 seasons, 2 premierships, coaching an Under 18 premiership, and being captain of the club since 2010, Kef will finish his playing career at the end of this season as one of the greatest leaders the club has seen, and more importantly one of the nicest blokes Danny has come across.
It could be a bit like a John Farnham tribute tour that keeps going as the win over the Magpies now puts UNSW/ES in a position where they can steal fifth spot from Sydney University after this weekend’s final round. See my preview later in the week for a more in-depth analysis.
Hail King Carey
On the subject of footballing royalty, another club co-captain will bring up a milestone this weekend. Pennant Hills’ Matt Carey will play his 150th game at home against North Shore. Carey who is nicknamed "King" coincidentally, had a great game last week against Sydney University, and is still regarded as one of the best kicks in the local league.
Day out for Bombers
North Shore celebrated their Back to Bears Day in style on Saturday, highlighted by their sixth win of the year against third-placed St George.
The Day marked 10 years since North Shore’s triumphant 2004 season in which they took out premierships in both seniors and reserves.
In further good news, the Bombers are the worthy recipients of the signed Swans jumper, after recording the largest growth in their senior club's ranks this year.
The Bombers, who look set to play finals in Division 4 and Under 19s, fielded a club record five senior sides in 2014, growing numbers from 153 in 2013 to 227 in 2014; a jump of 48%.
Blue letter day for PNG boys
Campbelltown trio; Jeconiah Peni, Theo Gavari and Alphonse Jambarufo will be playing on the MCG in the International Cup Grand Final after their win against NZ today. Well done boys.
Fletch look-a-like
Rarely are umpires put under the spotlight in this article, but an unnamed club person sent us this look-a-like of one of AFL Sydney’s top umpires, Carl Fletcher. Apparently there is a Separated at Birth saga of Fletcher and ABC News Breakfast's Michael Rowland.
Grogan blows it
Andrew Grogan (Holroyd Parramatta) ALMOST got off his nudie run attempting to score his first goal of the season. From a set shot 40 metres out on a 45 degree angle- he kicked it over the post....the only shame being it was the behind post.
NAB Fansplant
Following on from a recent Danny article, Holroyd-Parramatta (to our surprise, renamed the Blacktown Goannas for this segment) and Penrith’s Division Five sides got some airtime as part of the NAB Footify campaign.
As part of the promotion where five fans from around the globe who know nothing about AFL brought are to Australia to 5 footy mad households, the Bond’s play host to Kumar.
