Mansfield have the chance of having one of the biggest days in the club’s proud history today. Not only will be the Eagles be trying to bring Benalla’s undefeated record to a halt, the club and town will celebrate the opening of the Mansfield Recreation Reserve Redevelopment, a project costing more than $2 million. The opening will be performed at 2pm by member for parliament and former champion footballer, Dr Bill SYKES, and former GVFL Board member and Mansfield Shire Mayor, Cr Ryan ROBINSON, who for several years was a football writer for the Shepparton News.
The Eagles served it up to the Bombers last Saturday and in fact led at the end of each quarter until the last when they ran out of legs and the Paul NEWMAN Show continued for the Bombers. Having the legs at this time of the season to go all the way with the flag aspirants is a big ask because the Saints are super fit and can’t wait for the September action to begin. Eagles coach, Simon DOLLING will ask his players for a similar showing against the Saints today and if they could pull off a miracle it would put the topping on the party cake and give them a day they will remembers for many years to come.
Shepparton United and Shepparton Swans meet in a blockbuster at The D. The Swans want to retain second place on the ladder while the Demons are equally desperate to remain in the six. The last time they met at Princess Park in round three the Swans prevailed by 12 points and today the margin will again be small because the Demons are back in town as they showed against Echuca last Saturday at The D. Justin MADDERN continues to kick goals for the Swans and his eight last Saturday against Seymour took his total for the season to 68.
His performance against the Lions and throughout the season has earned him the Home Central Player of the Round and his $200 voucher will be presented to him before the game.
Demons co-coach, Tim LOOBY, produces his magic week in, week out and if his players go with him like they did last Saturday they could cause the Swans a heap of trouble.
Tatura and Rochester clash in another game which should draw another good crowd to Tatura. The last time they met in round three at Rochester the Tigers won by 11 points and once again the two sides should put on a cracker of a display right to the siren. The Tasmanian Devil, Sonny WHITING, showed early in the season he could play footy but of late has excelled and shown his true Tassie form. He has booted 55 goals for the season and one of the Tigers better defenders will be sent to the small forward today to try and contain him. At the other end the Colbinabbin Kid, Grant WEEKS, is on 80 goals for the season and he can be expected to boot another five or six today his midfielders present the ball to him.
Seymour and Euroa will produce another thrilling match for spectators. When these two sides met on Anzac Day at Euroa, the Magpies won by 14 points and their positions on the ladder would suggest the Pies will again be victorious but that is not necessarily the case because the Lions are more than capable of winning especially if coach Brent COLBERT plays. COLBERT missed last Saturday’s game after being concussed the previous week and he was sorely missed against the Swans.
Saad SAAD is still kicking goals despite stiff opposition and lack of opportunities and his 67 to date is outstanding when it is considered the Lions have only won two games for the season.
Mooroopna and Shepparton will put on a good game at Mooroopna with the CAMPBELL brothers featuring from the sidelines. At The D on Anzac Day, Shepparton under new coach and former Cats coach, Brad CAMPBELL, surprised all by winning by 24 points. His brother and Cats coach, Blake will remind his men before they leave the dressing rooms the importance of winning today if they want to play finals footy.
On Sunday Echuca play host to Kyabram at Victoria Park Oval, Echuca, and I can’t see the Murray Bombers reversing the Anzac Day result when the Bombers won by 47 points. Paul NEWMAN is back to his best and he could kick another bag today which is good news for the Bombers heading for the finals and bad news for the Murray Bombers.
