St Joseph's College have hung on in a nail-biting encounter in the Brisbane Lions Cup Secondary girls Grand-Final against St Saviour's College.
The game could of went either way, right up until the last seconds as a fast-finishing St Saviour's side couldn't quite make the most of their inside forward fifty entries. The first school-girls game played under lights at Rockville Oval was a see-sawing affair that saw both sides gain momentum at different stages throughout the match.
Two early goals to St Saviour's in the opening minutes of the first stanza saw the girls in red and blue strike the first blows of the big game. Taking a handy, 14-point lead into the first break.
However an early second quarter goal set the scene for the second term, as Amy Martin, Rebekah Rogers and Michelle McCormack slot home three quick goals to gain the lead at the first break.
After the long break, St Saviour's inaccuracy in front of the big sticks was their biggest enemy, as the girls in red and blue struggled to make an impact on the score-board. Another goal to Amy Martin and Michelle McCormack regained the momentum for St Joseph's.
The final quarter was all St Saviour's College; however the girls from 'St Savs' were unable to make the most of their opportunities in front goals kicking four behinds for the last quarter. St Saviour's defence lead by Grace Krautz was outstanding but unfortunately not even the hard running Krautz could of change the Saviour's sides inaccurate kicking on goal.
St Joseph's were able to hang on for a nail-biting 5.4 (34) to 4.9 (33) victory.
All-Australian Shaleise Law, along with Cassandra Mooka and Grace Krautz were the standouts for St Saviour's. Michelle McCormack was by far the standout Joey's player and judged best on ground by the voting panel.
St Joseph's will no progress down to Brisbane on 28th August to contest the State Semi-Finals against winning schools from the Gold Coast and West Brisbane regions.
