GIANTS aim for three straight
Manly-Warringah are in the box seat to claim their third straight club championship courtesy of last weekend’s results. With Western Suburbs sitting in second spot, it was the GIANTS who knocked them off in Seniors (Premier Division) and Reserves (Division Two) at Weldon Oval.
The current top side in Nor-West did what they had to do in securing a Blue Rynse in their annual Back to Benson Day, but only have one Division Three match in which they can claim points.
The top three currently is; Nor-West (158.4), Manly-Warringah (154) and Western Suburbs (149).
Power outage
You could probably excuse Southern Power for booking their End of Season Footy Trip early given their start to the season, but there is a chance they could have competing objectives come September. With their Trip booked a couple of months ago for Preliminary Final weekend, they could usurp the stumbling Pennant Hills for fifth place. Currently two games behind, they are every chance of beating the Demons this weekend before a winnable clash at home against Illawarra in the final round. Conversely, the Demons play second-placed Macquarie University in the final round.
Puppy Love
While they didn’t win on the field, the Blues were in fine form off it for the club’s 1989, 94 and 99 Grand Final Reunion Night.
Dave Linsen was one of a few to take full advantage of the unlimited bar tab. With luck on his side after the event the boys headed to one of Campbelltown's finest (insert sarcasm here) establishments in Level Two. As the night went on... Dave found a puppy on the dance floor.
Australia’s Favourite Chippy
The Cheese himself, Alex Goodall is going to start a new weekly segment called "What do you do for a crust." In Pennant Hills pre-game chat, senior coach Chris Yard likes to ask certain players what they think key opposition players are like, how they play etc etc and he always phrases it "So what does he do?" He asked Cheese and he said "I think he works in retail." Classic!
By The Numbers
The battle for the leading AFL Sydney goal kicker is well and truly alive. Captain Kevin Kirk (Division 5) from Penrith leads with 70 goals, ahead of Brayden Fowler (Manly Premier Division) 69, and Penrith Division 3 sharpshooter, Mitchell Stevens 68- including an 11 goal haul a fortnight ago.
St George registered the first double century on the weekend in their big win in Under 19 Division One over Sydney Hills Eagles. The next closest was the 197 scored by Moorebank against UNSW/ES in Division Two earlier in the season.
Holroyd-Parramatta’s canteen at Gipps Road received a 99% satisfaction rating.
You would have had long odds on it but Ted Widmer kicked six in Pennant Hills big win over Campbelltown in Premier Division.
It may have looked like it but the 235 combined points scored by UNSW/ES and North Shore in their Premier Division clash was not the highest combined total in the top grade this season, despite both kicking over 100 points each. Instead it was the 239 points scored by St George (164) and Sydney Hills (75) in their Round 8 encounter.
Danny loves keeping an eye on the star juniors coming through. A story caught his eye earlier this week with Camden Under 15 gun, Mitchell Bell having kicked over 150 goals this year in the Western Sydney junior competition. This apparently is the highest total nationally this year. Bell’s older brother, Aidan is one of the most improved players this year with the Campbelltown seniors.
AFL Sydney Snapshots
As mooted on Facebook, we are this year having "The Grill" type segment as part of the Phelan Medal entertainment. We have some of the biggest names participating in the Q&A segment. If you want to be involved, email our poor Essendon supporter, Scotty B at scott.burkinshaw@aflnswact.com.au
Phelan Medal Market Odds
On the subject of the Phelan, we asked the Community last week who they thought would claim a prize on the night. If there was an award for most name tags in a Facebook post, Connor Pettersson would win by the length of the straight after he put forward a dozen names. Chris Donovan was a popular nominee to steal a couple of votes, as was Harry and Tom Angel who combined could scrap into the top 30.
Spotted
- UTS personality, Andrew Christie was seen paying close attention to his Finnish girlfriend in the stands by teammates.
- Jennifer Lew from Sydney University Women’s in talks with agents after her contender for AFL Sydney Mark of the Year on the weekend.
- Finally, evidence has emerged (see left) of what the Magpies’ Justin O’Neill was seen wearing when he was out with the Sydney Hill Eagles clubbing a fortnight ago. It's said he's considering a movement to either the Balmain Tigers or Sydney Hills Eagles judging by his choice of attire.
"He dresses like a tiger and dances like an eagle," a witness said.
