Bombers grounded, Reddies strengthen as premiership favourites and Cougars, Tigers roaring
Goondiwindi have kept their hope of finals alive with an impressive 17.12 (114) to 11.6 (72) victory over South Toowoomba in their round 17 fixture at Riddles Oval.
The Bombers held a slender 1-point lead at quarter time, on the back of an opening term of 5 straight majors to the Hawks 4.5 in front of the sticks. But for the third time this season, the men in red and black had 8-goals kicked on them in the second quarter; however they did manage 2 goals of their own.
Trailing by 37-points at the main break, the Bombers were made to play catch up for the rest of the game as Hawks young ruckman Matthew Brown tore South Toowoomba apart. Brown won his fair share of hit-outs with majority going to advantage but it was his around the ground work that stood out most.
Brenton Jardine kicked 5-majors from the midfield, as the player-coach seem to have no opponent all day.
Veteran Bomber forward Keith Webb booted 5 for the visitors but it wasn't enough as the Hawks ran out 42-point victors over South Toowoomba.
Matthew Brown was arguable the Hawks best player, as was David O'Toole off half-back repelling numerous Bomber attacks. Jeff Neumann was the best for South Toowoomba judged by the Bombers coaching staff.
In the weekends other games Warwick improved its chance of taking out the AFL Darling Downs minor premiership after beating Coolaroo by 80 points at Reddies Oval on Saturday.
The Redback’s defeated a Coolaroo team missing the likes of Tom Rudolph and Phil Dreise 20.21 (141) to 9.7 (61) to go six points clear at the top of the table.
A seven-goal second quarter set up the win for the Redback’s as Warwick won every quarter against premiership contenders Coolaroo.
Kurt Heier and Benjamin Heppell each kicked five goals for Warwick, with Brendan Iles slotting four.
Warwick has the bye this week and will have to beat South Toowoomba in the final round to clinch the minor premiership.
Meanwhile, University moved into second on the ladder with a 30.21 (201) to 2.0 (12) demolition of Highfields. Star player Heath Gniel returned, booting 8-majors and was well assisted by his two tall forwards in Yosh and Reilly who booted 4-each.
Utility Rick Mackay was the main destroyed however, judged best on ground for the Cougars.
In the other game, Toowoomba Tigers posted a 188-14 win over Lockyer Valley.
