With four rounds left to play, the battle for a place in the final six becomes more competitive, if that’s possible, as the weeks roll on.
Shepparton pushing hard for a finals berth go to Benalla today looking for four points against the league leaders, who have only dropped two games for the season and looking to go one better on the last Sunday in September this year and win the premiership. The Saints leading goal kick in the Thirds is Charlie MORRISON, who has played the past two games in the seniors, however, on Saturday against Shepparton United they produced another sharp shooter in Brody WEBSTERr who booted 10 for the game. Brody is just one of a number of talented youngsters in Saints colors.
Shepparton did a good job to run a dead heat with the Bombers at The D last Saturday and they will have to again produce their best to beat the Saints at home.
Shepparton Swans who showed so much early in the season are now in seventh place on the ladder, behind today’s opponents, Seymour, on percentage. The Swans have the home ground advantage but they will need more than that to get over the Lions and back in the six. From 11 shots on Saturday against Euroa, the Swans couldn’t kick a goal and that’s one aspect of their game they will need to lift if they are to get the four points to put them back in the six.
The Demons at The D will take on Echuca who will be hurting after getting beaten by Mooroopna last Saturday. The Murray Bombers want these four points to help consolidate their third place on the ladder, while the Cats are eyeing the choice spot in the six. The Demons will try hard but if the Murray Bombers can produce their best footy, they will get the four points while they will be looking to Layton McCANN and Nicholas DENAHAY to kick a winning score.
League leaders, Euroa, will be home to Tatura which will be a percentage booster for the Magpies. Jett TROTTER took his tally for the season to 23 with three against the Swans last Saturday and he and Robert STAFF, who has kicked 32 for the season, will finish off the Magpies good work in the middle. Liam BORRELLIi has 21 votes in the Sherrin Award, for the best Thirds player for the season, one behind Matthew CORDY of United, and he will again be one of the stand outs for the Bulldogs.
Rochester will be home to Mooroopna and here’s wishing the Tigers Jack AHERN and John JOHNSTONE a quick recovery from a head collision last Saturday. The Tigers can least afford injuries, especially those inflicted by a team mate, at anytime of the season, however, on the good news front Daniel HAMILTON and Tim POOLE continue to poll well in the Sherrin. The Cats Joshua CARKEEK booted four on Saturday against Echuca to take his tally for the season to 18 and he will be hoping for more goals today, while Cody TANCRED has 19 votes in the Sherrin Award and looking for another possession gathering game.
Kyabram at fifth place will be looking to collect four points against Mansfield at Kyabram. The Eagles are more than capable of causing an upset and the Bombers want to approach this game with caution because the Bombers need points to consolidate. Cody O’NEIL is kicking goals for the Bombers and his five on Saturday to take his tally to 35 for the season was instrumental in the Bombers drawing with Shepparton.
