Streak ends, history made, goal kicking clinic and star female footballers
1. South Toowoomba have ended the University Cougars undefeated streak in the Under 12 McDonald's Trophy as the boys and girls in red and black recorded a hard fought and low scoring 3.4 (22) to 1.3 (9) victory. Star Bomber Jackson Montgomery and Cody Iacono were the two stand out players for their sides but University would prefer to lose now compared to finals.
2. Warwick created history for them-selves on the weekend as for the first time a Redback's Under 12 side has defeated a Dalby Swans Under 12 out-fit. It may be small achievement for many but a massive step forward for the Southern Downs based club and one that shows they are on the right path in developing their juniors.
3. Saints Under 14's are marching, in just their second season in the McDonald's Shield the South Burnett Saints sit 2 points shy of the top 4 with their 7th win of the season over Goondiwindi. With games against Dalby (1st), Warwick (9th) and Coolaroo (5th) their finals hope is in their own hands.
4. James Sprason booted an incredible 18-goal haul on the weekend against Toowoomba in the Under 16 McDonald's Cup taking his season tally to 48. Sprason has sky rocketed up the goal-kicking leader board to third overall and is within reach of gun goal-kicker Tom Clark. He has a shot at the title with games against Warwick, Lockyer Valley and Dalby, with 13 in total against those three teams this year, if he is able to replicate those feats again he may snatch the award from Clark.
5. The future looks bright for female football across the Darling Downs. The region has produced some of the State's and Nations best players, with numerous up and coming stars following in the foot-steps of DD products Marnie McGorm, Georgie Seaniger, Belle Baldock and Shaliese Law. Get use to the names such as Lara Paget (Chinchilla), Zimmorlei Farquharson (Dalby), Madeline Woodall (South Toowoomba), Madison Schroen (Lockyer Valley), Jackie Bell (Goondiwindi), Sophie Mengel (Coolaroo), Selina Herbert (Toowoomba), Apajok Deng (University) and Skye Elliot (Warwick). This is just to name one from each club, the region has a number of star female footballers right across the competition and it won't be long until youth girls football is on offer across the region.
