Western Districts knock over West Coast Hawks at Minnipa. The Tigers have threatened to beat a ladder leader for so long, and they have come close for so long. The day of the Tiger has arrived as they eclipsed the Hawks by eight points in a round that has really changed finals possibilites that looked so set up a few weeks ago. Straight kicking was the order of the day, as the Tigers didnt register a behind until the last quarter, and after trailing all match, finishing over the top of the Hawks. Damon O Loughlin King has a day out with five goals, well supported by Jerel Fromm. Strength accross the backline with Jesse Hull B.O.G. The Hawks missed some keys and are dealing with some injury concerns, well served as always by Dylan Kelsh, ever reliable Derick Freeman, Tyson Montgomerie. Brent Bascombe back in the side with four goals. Three games in to the third round, and the Hawks have lost two of them, some thinking to do, and the Tigers take a major scalp into the major round.
Elliston has all but sewn up a finals berth, scraping through a tense match at Bomberland. In a day of comebacks, the Roosters were in serious trouble at three quarter time, down by four goals and the Bombers seemingly in control, but quick early goals set up hope. The match was played in a finals manner, players from both sides excelling, only coming down to a last gasp mark by club superstar Fred Romanowycz, 3m from goal, but a 60 deg angle and a minute to go. He kicked truly to book a red and white finals place. It is sad to have a loser in a match that is so closely contested, and these contests are so often won and lost on the one percenters, and the if onlys? Aaron Castley played a huge part in the win and the comeback, along with Andrew Mc Leod in the ruck and mercurial Tom Rumbleow. Wirrulla well served by Sam North, Andrew Bitmead back and Simon Webb forward. Jason Henderson was everywhere, Craig Johnson pulled down some towering marks to finish with five goals.
The sides already in the four will not be savouring the prospect of the surging Roosters
Central Eyre comfortably accounted for a young Wudinna United outfit, running away with a game that was reasonably close until half time. The strength and running power of the Bulldogs to the fore again, and importantly a good hit out at the venue of this years Grand Final. Big Nails O Brien on target with four majors, Martin Grocke with three and then the spoils well shared thereafter. Jake Bruce back to his best, Jared Sampson, Ty Mc Kenna both continuing great seasons. Jake Sampson through unscathed from leg injury. For the Maggies, Henry Zwar did plenty around the middle, Darryl Marshall up back is another who is playing great football. Ryan Du Bois cameo return very effective.
In the reserves, The Hawks coasted to a comfortable win at Minnipa The Bulldogs bared their teeth against Wudinna United, almost 100 point margin in what was expected to be much closer, but a testament to the depth of players at Centrals, and The Bombers won by an Elliston forfeit.
The Colts saw Wirrulla winning their first game for the year against the Roosters. The Bombers sang their song with gusto as they came from behind in the last quarter to seal their victory. Wudinna United and West Coast Hawks both winning with the 10 goal rule, the margin in the Magpies v Bulldogs game the most surprising given that these two are always close.
