Robert STAFF is the second wildcard nomination for the Mooroopna Golf Club Rising Star Award. The 12 clubs have nominated a rising star, now the award focuses on six wildcard nominations for the award, the first being Mat O’DWYER from Shepparton United who appeared in last Saturday’s GVFL Weekender.
Robert has been part of the Euroa Football Netball Club since last season, playing Under 18 football, although he did play four senior games, which was an outstanding achievement as a 16-year-old. He was part of the Murray Bushrangers squad last year and was invited to join the group again this season but declined for a number of reasons. Robert began playing football as a six-year-old for Violet Town under 14’s, kicking one goal for the season.
He took part in the Benalla Auskick program from 2003 to 2006 then progressed to the Benalla junior football competition playing under 12’s B Division in 2007 and 2008, winning the best and fairest player awards in each year. Robert then played in the A Reserve division at Under 14 level in 2009 at Benalla before moving to Euroa juniors in 2010.
At the Magpies, playing in the Seymour junior league at under 14 and under 16 level, Robert experienced team success in winning premierships at Under 14 and Under 16 level, while in 2011 and 2012, he played in Under 16 grand finals, winning one and losing the other. On both occasions he was named best on ground.
Last season his team mate Zac GLEESON won the GVFL Thirds Pattison Medal best and fairest award with 20 votes while Robert polled 14.
Other rising star nominations at this stage are Nick SNEYD (United), Rhys McKENZIE (Mooroopna), Patrick O’SULLIVAN (Shepparton), Henry PENI (Swans), Nate TROTTER (Euroa), Richard TONIZZO (Echuca), Bill COX (Seymour), Kyle MUELLER (Kyabram), Charlie MORRISON (Benalla), Matt PALMER (Rochester, Lachie CHRISTOPHER (Mansfield), Sean MARTIN (Tatura) and Mat O’Dwyer (Shepparton United).
